A77941 A declaration of the sad and great persecution and martyrdom of the people of God, called Quakers, in New--England for the worshipping of God. Wherof 22 have been banished upon pain of death. 03 have been martyred. 03 have had their right-ears cut. 01 hath been burned in the hand with the letter H. 31 persons have received 650 stripes. 01 was beat while his body was like a jelly. Several were beat with pitched ropes. Five appeals made by them to England, were denied by the rulers of Boston. One thousand forty four pounds worth of goods hath been taken from them (being poor men) for meeting together in the fear of the Lord, and for keeping the commands of Christ. One now lyeth in iron-fetters, condemned to dye. Also, some considerations, presented to the King, which is in answer to a petition and address, which was presented unto him by the general court at Boston : subscribed by J. Endicot, the chief persecutor there; thinking thereby to cover themselves from the blood of the innocent. Burrough, Edward, 1634-1662. 1661 (1661) Wing B5994; Thomason E1086_4; ESTC R13926 22,607 32

he_o high_a and_o mighty_a prince_n and_o dread_a sovereign_n and_o such_o like_a and_o that_o they_o be_v the_o king_n servant_n etc._n etc._n when_o as_o not_o long_o since_o they_o have_v signify_v by_o their_o word_n quote_v against_o they_o that_o there_o be_v danger_n in_o the_o king_n of_o scot_n as_o they_o call_v he_o and_o repute_v he_o a_o troubler_n of_o england_n and_o number_v he_o with_o the_o popish_a prince_n of_o germany_n or_o among_o they_o let_v but_o the_o king_n consider_v their_o own_o word_n and_o he_o shall_v plain_o read_v as_o well_o the_o temper_n of_o their_o spirit_n against_o he_o not_o long_o since_o as_o he_o shall_v see_v their_o hypocrisy_n and_o fawn_a flattery_n at_o this_o time_n and_o he_o may_v full_o perceive_v that_o these_o petitioner_n be_v give_v to_o change_n though_o they_o will_v make_v he_o believe_v otherwise_o and_o this_o their_o address_n unto_o the_o king_n be_v like_o the_o approach_n of_o the_o uncircumcised_a gibeonite_n unto_o joshua_n ch_n 9_o who_o wrought_v wy_o and_o deceitful_o use_v the_o same_o word_n to_o joshua_n we_o be_v thy_o servant_n as_o these_o petitioner_n have_v use_v to_o the_o king_n who_o deceitful_a address_n be_v equal_o parallel_v with_o that_o mention_v the_o case_n be_v worth_a observe_n joshua_n 9_o vers_fw-la 4_o 6_o 9_o 3._o as_o for_o be_v zealous_a of_o government_n and_o order_n not_o seditious_a nor_o schismatic_n as_o they_o say_v it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o their_o government_n and_o the_o order_n thereof_o be_v not_o only_o different_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o government_n and_o order_n of_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n but_o different_a and_o contrary_a also_o to_o the_o wholesome_a constitution_n of_o the_o civil_a government_n of_o england_n who_o have_v make_v law_n and_o execute_v they_o to_o banishment_n and_o death_n without_o any_o power_n derive_v from_o the_o lawful_a authority_n of_o england_n which_o be_v absolute_a contrary_n to_o their_o patent_n by_o which_o they_o hold_v their_o jurisdiction_n which_o say_v they_o shall_v make_v no_o law_n contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o england_n etc._n etc._n and_o i_o shall_v not_o charge_v they_o in_o the_o king_n presence_n further_o of_o sedition_n and_o schism_n than_o himself_o believe_v concern_v they_o again_o the_o petitioner_n say_v they_o can_v not_o live_v without_o the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o they_o be_v not_o permit_v the_o use_n of_o public_a worship_n without_o such_o a_o yoke_n subscription_n and_o conformity_n as_o they_o can_v not_o consent_v unto_o without_o sin_n etc._n etc._n in_o answer_n to_o this_o this_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o these_o petitioner_n have_v lay_v heavy_a yoke_n of_o subscription_n and_o conformity_n upon_o other_o than_o ever_o be_v lay_v upon_o themselves_o witness_v their_o impose_v fine_n upon_o such_o as_o can_v conform_v to_o their_o worship_n some_o ten_o shilling_n some_o forty_o shilling_n and_o some_o five_o pound_n if_o any_o shall_v be_v absent_a from_o their_o assembly_n it_o be_v so_o much_o a_o day_n and_o if_o any_o keep_v any_o meeting_n different_a from_o their_o way_n of_o public_a worship_n it_o be_v so_o much_o a_o time_n and_o these_o be_v unjust_a and_o illegal_a imposition_n and_o it_o be_v a_o heinous_a yoke_n of_o tyranny_n put_v upon_o the_o neck_n of_o the_o king_n good_a subject_n without_o any_o power_n derive_v in_o this_o case_n from_o the_o king_n this_o they_o themselves_o do_v and_o yet_o be_v complain_v of_o such_o imposition_n and_o yoke_n lay_v upon_o they_o by_o the_o bishop_n which_o be_v not_o compareable_a to_o these_o which_o discover_v their_o own_o just_a condemnation_n in_o the_o same_o matter_n for_o which_o they_o accuse_v other_o and_o thus_o these_o consideration_n be_v present_v to_o the_o king_n in_o vindication_n of_o that_o innocent_a people_n call_v quaker_n who_o these_o petitioner_n have_v accuse_v as_o guilty_a of_o heinous_a crime_n that_o themselves_o may_v appear_v innocent_a of_o the_o cruelty_n and_o injustice_n and_o shed_v of_o the_o blood_n of_o just_a man_n without_o cause_n be_v man_n of_o guilty_a conscience_n upon_o who_o the_o terror_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o king_n seem_v to_o be_v because_o of_o what_o they_o have_v do_v but_o now_o let_v the_o king_n right_o consider_v of_o the_o case_n between_o we_o and_o they_o and_o let_v he_o not_o hide_v his_o face_n from_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o cry_n of_o innocent_a blood_n and_o for_o a_o further_a testimony_n of_o the_o wickedness_n and_o enmity_n of_o these_o petitioner_n and_o to_o demonstrate_v how_o far_o they_o have_v proceed_v contrary_a to_o the_o good_a law_n and_o authority_n of_o england_n and_o contrary_a to_o their_o own_o patent_n hereunto_o be_v annex_v a_o brief_a of_o their_o unjust_a deal_n towards_o the_o quaker_n so_o call_v e._n b._n a_o declaration_n of_o some_o part_n of_o the_o suffering_n of_o the_o
