to_o avoid_v confusion_n and_o to_o establish_v unity_n by_o uniformity_n to_o preserve_v the_o decency_n of_o so_o sacred_a a_o duty_n prescribe_v this_o form_n of_o word_n these_o gesture_n and_o rite_n and_o this_o sign_n as_o of_o great_a signification_n that_o as_o st._n paul_n say_v we_o shall_v glory_n in_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n and_o receive_v that_o as_o a_o badge_n or_o cognizance_n of_o our_o christian_a profession_n the_o same_o answer_n will_v serve_v for_o all_o the_o ceremony_n which_o be_v make_v use_n of_o or_o command_v by_o the_o church_n of_o england_n nor_o shall_v we_o need_v to_o fear_v lest_o by_o this_o power_n of_o the_o church_n the_o ceremony_n shall_v swell_v to_o such_o a_o bulk_n as_o to_o be_v burdensome_a by_o be_v too_o numerous_a since_o the_o governor_n themselves_o be_v not_o without_o a_o rule_n in_o this_o particular_a which_o be_v the_o determination_n of_o the_o first_o general_n council_n at_o jerusalem_n 15.28_o act_n 15.28_o for_o it_o seem_v good_a to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o to_o we_o to_o lay_v upon_o you_o no_o great_a burden_n than_o these_o necessary_a thing_n one_o of_o those_o necessary_a thing_n be_v before_o indifferent_a viz._n to_o abstain_v from_o thing_n strangle_v and_o st._n paul_n seem_v to_o make_v even_o the_o other_o about_o the_o thing_n offer_v to_o idol_n the_o same_o which_o now_o be_v make_v by_o the_o council_n necessary_a but_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v a_o real_a clog_n of_o ceremony_n which_o none_o can_v just_o complain_v of_o among_o we_o yet_o will_v any_o man_n loose_v the_o substance_n for_o fear_n of_o the_o shadow_n refuse_v to_o eat_v good_a and_o wholesome_a diet_n because_o the_o dish_n be_v silver_n and_o too_o much_o garnish_v and_o by_o schism_n and_o disobedience_n run_v the_o hazard_n of_o his_o own_o soul_n and_o all_o those_o seduce_v by_o he_o mere_o to_o avoid_v the_o do_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o if_o he_o do_v they_o not_o in_o the_o least_o prejudice_n his_o salvation_n for_o these_o be_v only_o the_o condition_n of_o our_o maintain_v peace_n unity_n and_o charity_n but_o not_o the_o condition_n upon_o which_o our_o salvation_n depend_v because_o god_n have_v no_o where_o say_v he_o that_o do_v these_o thing_n shall_v be_v damn_v and_o he_o that_o abstain_v from_o they_o shall_v be_v save_v but_o he_o have_v say_v we_o must_v hear_v the_o church_n and_o if_o she_o command_v this_o for_o peace_n sake_n we_o must_v obey_v lest_o we_o be_v just_o esteem_v as_o publican_n and_o heathen_n beside_o they_o who_o command_n must_v answer_v to_o god_n for_o themselves_o and_o they_o who_o be_v to_o obey_v shall_v not_o answer_v for_o the_o error_n of_o their_o superior_n but_o no_o man_n can_v answer_v to_o god_n for_o his_o disobedience_n against_o they_o in_o these_o command_n not_o only_o because_o they_o be_v not_o judge_n whether_o they_o ought_v to_o do_v or_o not_o to_o do_v what_o they_o be_v command_v but_o because_o there_o can_v then_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n as_o obedience_n if_o every_o man_n may_v be_v his_o own_o judge_n for_o what_o one_o man_n may_v do_v out_o of_o pure_a doubt_n daily_o in_o his_o own_o person_n he_o therefore_o take_v care_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v some_o leave_v behind_o he_o who_o might_n and_o ephesus_n be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o populous_a city_n of_o asia_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o vast_a concourse_n of_o people_n from_o all_o part_n to_o the_o famous_a temple_n of_o diana_n and_o there_o be_v many_o congregation_n of_o christian_n there_o he_o have_v by_o the_o space_n of_o two_o year_n continue_v there_o so_o that_o all_o they_o who_o dwell_v in_o asia_n hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n both_o jew_n and_o greek_n he_o therefore_o send_v for_o the_o presbyter_n who_o reside_v in_o that_o city_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o apostolical_a authority_n and_o there_o declare_v unto_o they_o that_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v they_o be_v to_o take_v that_o care_n of_o the_o church_n which_o he_o have_v do_v and_o that_o they_o may_v not_o do_v this_o of_o their_o own_o head_n or_o fear_v to_o do_v it_o for_o want_n of_o a_o lawful_a call_v and_o ordination_n he_o declare_v the_o will_n of_o god_n to_o they_o and_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v appoint_v they_o to_o be_v bishop_n so_o that_o they_o come_v indeed_o presbyter_n to_o he_o but_o they_o go_v away_o bishop_n from_o he_o and_z bishop_n not_o of_o his_o own_o but_o the_o holy_a ghost_n appointment_n it_o be_v a_o rule_n among_o divine_n that_o where_o the_o literal_a sense_n of_o scripture_n be_v plain_a we_o be_v to_o follow_v that_o and_o that_o this_o be_v the_o plain_a historical_a and_o literal_a meaning_n of_o the_o word_n without_o the_o least_o wrest_v or_o violence_n offer_v to_o they_o be_v most_o obvious_a and_o that_o by_o this_o power_n of_o episcopacy_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n add_v to_o their_o former_a of_o presbytery_n they_o be_v to_o take_v the_o care_n of_o the_o government_n of_o the_o church_n as_o well_o in_o rule_v as_o instruct_v there_o be_v these_o reason_n first_o when_o he_o send_v for_o they_o he_o call_v they_o presbyter_n and_o not_o bishop_n which_o if_o there_o have_v be_v no_o difference_n he_o may_v as_o well_o have_v do_v and_o suppose_v that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n must_v foresee_v that_o this_o controversy_n will_v arise_v in_o the_o church_n we_o can_v believe_v he_o will_v contribute_v to_o it_o by_o such_o a_o ambiguity_n but_o the_o contrary_a that_o they_o be_v only_a presbyter_n as_o the_o holy_a ghost_n call_v they_o first_o and_o then_o advance_v to_o be_v bishop_n by_o his_o appointment_n second_o he_o put_v the_o government_n into_o their_o hand_n by_o resign_v his_o own_o in_o regard_n he_o be_v to_o see_v they_o no_o more_o three_o he_o direct_v they_o in_o their_o office_n which_o he_o divide_v into_o three_o particular_n first_o 28._o verse_n 28._o to_o feed_v the_o church_n of_o god_n which_o he_o have_v purchase_v with_o his_o own_o blood_n to_o instruct_v they_o in_o the_o faith_n and_o doctrine_n of_o christian_a religion_n second_o
