1679._o a_o farewell_o to_o popery_n in_o a_o letter_n to_o dr._n nicholas_n vice_n chancellor_n of_o oxford_n and_o warden_n of_o new-college_n from_o w.h._n m.d._n late_o fellow_n of_o the_o same_o college_n etc._n etc._n sir_n though_o i_o be_v not_o so_o happy_a to_o live_v under_o your_o government_n and_o thereby_o take_v so_o near_o a_o prospect_n of_o your_o merit_n as_o my_o fellow_n collegiate_n have_v often_o tell_v i_o they_o do_v yet_o some_o of_o your_o worthy_a act_n tend_v to_o the_o good_a of_o our_o university_n and_o best_a establishment_n of_o learning_n and_o virtue_n together_o have_v raise_v you_o admirer_n even_o where_o you_o may_v least_o imagine_v and_o if_o i_o shall_v here_o take_v occasion_n or_o presume_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o piety_n of_o your_o life_n the_o solidness_n of_o your_o judgement_n the_o gravity_n of_o your_o person_n or_o your_o prudent_a conduct_n in_o all_o particular_n of_o your_o government_n i_o must_v quite_o lay_v aside_o my_o intend_a design_n and_o write_v a_o volume_n on_o purpose_n therefore_o only_o congratulate_v the_o discreet_a choice_n of_o your_o university_n and_o college_n in_o a_o person_n so_o fit_v for_o the_o government_n of_o both_o and_o desire_v your_o favourable_a construction_n of_o what_o i_o write_v shall_v endeavour_v to_o make_v they_o both_o some_o amends_o for_o the_o scandal_n i_o may_v perhaps_o have_v occasion_v by_o my_o indiscreet_a conduct_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n such_o as_o give_v a_o public_a scandal_n shall_v do_v a_o public_a penance_n and_o i_o be_o content_v to_o undergo_v it_o as_o i_o be_o sure_a i_o must_v in_o the_o malicious_a censure_n of_o roman-catholic_n for_o it_o be_v very_o well_o worth_a the_o while_n to_o endure_v that_o and_o much_o more_o for_o the_o discharge_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n which_o be_v all_o i_o chief_o aim_v at_o in_o this_o matter_n though_o indeed_o it_o will_v be_v a_o comfortable_a addition_n too_o that_o i_o shall_v be_v full_o restore_v to_o the_o good_a opinion_n of_o those_o among_o who_o i_o be_v first_o and_o best_a principled_a nor_o can_v i_o at_o all_o doubt_n this_o last_o good_a effect_n if_o i_o either_o consider_v the_o real_a innocence_n of_o my_o action_n relate_v to_o religion_n or_o the_o goodness_n and_o well-wish_n that_o i_o have_v be_v often_o tell_v my_o fellow-collegiate_n have_v all_o along_o express_v towards_o i_o my_o own_o innocence_n will_v i_o hope_v sufficient_o appear_v by_o give_v the_o world_n a_o clear_a and_o true_a account_n of_o the_o first_o motive_n of_o my_o favour_v the_o popish_a way_n my_o behaviour_n since_o i_o espouse_v their_o cause_n and_o what_o reason_n have_v induce_v my_o judgement_n to_o fix_v again_o upon_o the_o old_a foundation_n this_o i_o shall_v do_v with_o much_o sincerity_n and_o candour_n and_o shall_v speak_v the_o utmost_a truth_n according_a to_o the_o best_a of_o my_o memory_n and_o the_o faithfule_a information_n my_o own_o conscience_n can_v give_v i_o it_o will_v seem_v very_o strange_a that_o too_o much_o charity_n &_o submission_n shall_v happen_v to_o drive_v a_o man_n headlong_o into_o the_o most_o uncharitable_a and_o proud_a church_n in_o the_o world_n and_o yet_o so_o it_o be_v with_o i_o you_o know_v sir_n that_o our_o college_n have_v have_v the_o fortune_n to_o retain_v great_a and_o more_o lively_a memorial_n of_o popery_n in_o statue_n and_o picture_n on_o the_o gate_n and_o in_o the_o chapel_n than_o any_o other_o throughout_o the_o university_n those_o sight_n do_v often_o put_v i_o in_o mind_n of_o that_o religion_n and_o find_v the_o best_a divine_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n unanimous_o agree_v that_o those_o superstition_n with_o many_o other_o have_v prevail_v over_o the_o world_n at_o least_o a_o thousand_o year_n before_o the_o reformation_n it_o strike_v my_o heart_n with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o compassion_n and_o make_v i_o often_o wish_v that_o roman-catholic_n be_v in_o the_o right_n and_o we_o in_o the_o wrong_n that_o the_o more_o people_n may_v thereby_o be_v save_v this_o charitable_a consideration_n do_v by_o degree_n work_v further_o and_o further_o but_o before_o ever_o i_o see_v any_o one_o of_o that_o persuasion_n or_o read_v any_o one_o of_o their_o book_n i_o do_v long_o to_o be_v convince_v that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o right_a way_n for_o the_o sake_n and_o general_a good_a of_o mankind_n so_o that_o by_o mere_a chance_n light_v upon_o a_o popish_a book_n in_o one_o of_o our_o chamber_n i_o open_v it_o with_o all_o the_o haste_n and_o greediness_n in_o the_o world_n and_o read_v it_o with_o as_o much_o joy_n as_o if_o i_o have_v find_v a_o treasure_n beyond_o value_n i_o be_v impatient_a to_o be_v draw_v from_o the_o book_n either_o by_o prayer_n meal_n visit_n or_o any_o other_o accident_n it_o overjoy_v i_o to_o find_v that_o they_o have_v some_o argument_n on_o their_o side_n and_o by_o that_o time_n i_o have_v get_v half_a way_n in_o the_o book_n i_o turn_v a_o zealous_a champion_n for_o they_o take_v their_o part_n vigorous_o wheresoever_o i_o chance_v on_o or_o can_v make_v a_o occasion_n and_o from_o that_o time_n be_v perfect_o deaf_a to_o any_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v say_v against_o they_o by_o the_o best_a wit_n of_o judgement_n that_o either_o college_n or_o university_n can_v oppose_v i_o with_o in_o private_a conversation_n now_o that_o which_o amaze_v i_o sometime_o be_v that_o i_o can_v possible_o have_v such_o a_o tendency_n of_o spirit_n so_o strong_a a_o impulse_n on_o my_o affection_n notwithstanding_o that_o i_o have_v not_o one_o relation_n in_o the_o world_n not_o one_o friend_n or_o acquaintance_n of_o that_o persuasion_n i_o so_o strange_o affect_v and_o consider_v how_o innocent_o i_o be_v delude_v upon_o no_o worse_a motive_n than_o too_o much_o charity_n i_o can_v promise_v myself_o the_o easy_a reconcilement_n to_o all_o such_o as_o have_v be_v scandalize_v at_o i_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o religion_n and_o as_o charity_n have_v this_o influence_n upon_o i_o so_o i_o hope_v i_o can_v in_o some_o sincerity_n say_v that_o a_o little_a humility_n incident_a to_o my_o natural_a temper_n make_v i_o think_v it_o duty_n and_o conscience_n to_o follow_v the_o guidance_n of_o those_o god_n have_v place_v over_o we_o in_o matter_n of_o religion_n and_o for_o that_o reason_n be_v ever_o very_o zealous_a for_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n so_o far_o that_o i_o think_v any_o little_a breach_n of_o the_o canon_n and_o constitution_n to_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o sacrilege_n this_o temper_n make_v i_o the_o fit_a to_o be_v work_v upon_o by_o a_o romish_a book_n call_v the_o the_o guide_n in_o controversy_n especial_o the_o 5_o part_n be_v a_o vindication_n of_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n about_o this_o time_n i_o happen_v to_o receive_v much_o encouragement_n to_o proceed_v in_o leave_v my_o college_n for_o sake_n of_o the_o religion_n i_o be_v so_o whole_o bend_v on_o from_o the_o discourse_n and_o example_n of_o mr._n r._n of_o magdalen_n college_n a_o most_o ingenious_a and_o honest_a man_n who_o i_o can_v never_o but_o have_v a_o particular_a respect_n for_o because_o i_o know_v he_o liad_v no_o manner_n of_o temporal_a motive_n to_o quit_v his_o all_o beside_o the_o preservation_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n he_o mean_v well_o i_o real_o think_v both_o to_o i_o and_o in_o what_o else_o he_o give_v offence_n therefore_o i_o shall_v never_o tax_v he_o unkind_o for_o what_o he_o mean_v honest_o but_o wish_v he_o hearty_o well_o though_o i_o imagine_v he_o to_o be_v go_v beyond_o all_o reach_n of_o hope_n of_o any_o return_n to_o the_o church_n he_o be_v bear_v in_o whatever_o be_v the_o matter_n it_o be_v very_o true_a that_o i_o be_v wind_v up_o to_o so_o high_a a_o zeal_n in_o those_o day_n that_o if_o i_o can_v now_o guess_v at_o or_o remember_v the_o constitution_n then_o of_o my_o mind_n i_o can_v have_v choose_v to_o have_v beg_v my_o bread_n or_o undergo_v any_o manner_n of_o affliction_n in_o that_o persuasion_n rather_o than_o to_o have_v enjoy_v the_o great_a plenty_n imaginable_a the_o empire_n of_o the_o world_n i_o do_v not_o forbear_v frequent_o to_o say_v continue_v a_o
