be_v in_o many_o thing_n of_o that_o nature_n as_o be_v not_o by_o other_o undertakable_a in_o which_o regard_n true_o as_o much_o grieve_v i_o be_o to_o find_v that_o present_a contrary_n and_o proportionable_a want_n of_o eminence_n and_o esteem_n give_v they_o in_o those_o place_n where_o monarchy_n have_v be_v eclipse_v or_o thrust_v out_o even_o by_o bring_v they_o thereby_o so_o much_o low_a as_o there_o follow_v to_o be_v more_o above_o they_o as_o i_o be_o offend_v at_o the_o extraordinary_a height_n and_o success_n of_o their_o antichristian_a pride_n where_o some_o inseparable_a lead_v away_o with_o the_o usurp_a interpretation_n of_o any_o unauthorised_a person_n who_o they_o shall_v always_o find_v either_o direct_o aim_v at_o their_o own_o interest_n therein_o or_o else_o in_o passion_n or_o emulation_n to_o one_o another_o they_o will_v instead_o of_o satisfy_v our_o doubt_n be_v still_o increase_a &_o extend_v their_o own_o difference_n among_o themselves_o until_o they_o have_v make_v they_o fundamental_o and_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n whereupon_o by_o anathema_n to_o their_o opponent_n they_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v to_o the_o accompilshment_n of_o their_o several_a dominion_n and_o honour_n in_o the_o church_n continual_o espouse_v their_o own_o quarrel_n upon_o we_o and_o engage_v we_o in_o civil_a broil_n if_o we_o do_v not_o this_o and_o keep_v not_o close_o to_o christ_n himself_o that_o be_v to_o that_o authority_n which_o be_v next_o and_o most_o represent_v he_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o continual_a danger_n to_o be_v make_v believe_v by_o subordinat_a minister_n 9.49_o that_o not_o follow_v of_o we_o that_o be_v not_o be_v of_o our_o sect_n be_v all_o one_o as_o not_o to_o be_v christian_n and_o to_o be_v against_o he_o against_o authority_n and_o brand_a their_o command_n as_o superstitious_a even_o in_o thing_n wherein_o christ_n honour_n and_o worship_n be_v near_o concern_v they_o be_v yet_o find_v so_o resolute_a in_o their_o own_o particular_a sect_n and_o tenant_n that_o they_o will_v have_v man_n belief_n and_o adherence_n to_o christ_n to_o be_v measure_v only_o by_o their_o belief_n and_o adherence_n to_o they_o which_o to_o my_o think_n be_v as_o high_a and_o plain_a idolatry_n as_o any_o can_v be_v but_o the_o immediate_a follow_a discourse_n of_o that_o text_n show_v the_o temper_n and_o aim_v of_o this_o humour_n when_o those_o very_a disciple_n be_v endeavour_v to_o wrest_v eliahs_n precedent_n by_o draw_v fire_n from_o heaven_n against_o that_o authority_n which_o oppose_v they_o the_o which_o although_o they_o be_v of_o another_o religion_n and_o jurisdiction_n too_o be_v yet_o rebuke_v by_o our_o saviour_n as_o proceed_v from_o a_o most_o ungospel-like_a spirit_n and_o show_v he_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o like_a passion_n with_o other_o and_o therefore_o for_o the_o true_a state_v of_o these_o thing_n we_o shall_v more_o brief_o say_v that_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v to_o perform_v the_o work_n of_o evangelist_n that_o be_v to_o preach_v unto_o we_o jesus_n and_o to_o prove_v and_o declare_v he_o to_o be_v the_o only_a fundamental_a object_n of_o faith_n and_o salvation_n so_o far_o have_v they_o their_o power_n from_o god_n alone_o but_o so_o far_o as_o they_o have_v diocessan_n or_o parochial_a charge_n and_o be_v in_o paticular_o to_o show_v unto_o we_o how_o we_o be_v to_o obey_v he_o as_o christ_n and_o king_n in_o any_o outward_a deportment_n so_o far_o be_v they_o to_o derive_v their_o authority_n from_o that_o church_n power_n which_o have_v from_o crhist_a power_n to_o ordain_v and_o separate_v they_o unto_o that_o work_n so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v entrust_v with_o the_o guidance_n of_o god_n inward_a kingdom_n in_o our_o heart_n that_o be_v to_o persuade_v man_n to_o faith_n in_o christ_n which_o be_v the_o chief_a work_n of_o the_o primitive_a teacher_n among_o the_o infidel_n so_o far_o be_v they_o god_n minister_n and_o not_o man_n but_o as_o they_o be_v to_o meddle_v with_o man_n abbearance_n and_o external_a behaviour_n in_o christ_n kingdom_n the_o church_n that_o be_v to_o show_v how_o to_o perform_v obedience_n to_o he_o be_v convert_v and_o acknowledge_v his_o power_n so_o far_o be_v they_o to_o have_v warrant_n from_o those_o his_o chief_a deputy_n in_o the_o church_n whereupon_o two_o thing_n will_v plain_o follow_v to_o the_o advantage_n of_o the_o clergy_n above_o other_o first_o that_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o ordination_n they_o be_v to_o be_v hold_v so_o proper_o god_n minister_n that_o in_o preach_v and_o administration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o some_o other_o thing_n none_o but_o they_o have_v power_n to_o intermeddle_v and_o yet_o be_v they_o not_o hereby_o exclude_v from_o have_v external_a jurisdiction_n and_o power_n over_o man_n person_n also_o if_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o church_n wherein_o they_o live_v shall_v so_o think_v fit_a nay_o when_o the_o representative_a authority_n of_o that_o
the_o good_a of_o man_n may_v be_v still_o real_o and_o true_o hold_v and_o repute_v as_o god_n anoint_v in_o which_o sense_n we_o be_v to_o interpret_v that_o say_n touch_v not_o my_o anoint_a and_o do_v my_o prophet_n no_o harm_n 105.15_o give_v to_o such_o as_o exercise_v their_o power_n by_o patriarchal_a right_n before_o kingship_n under_o the_o law_n as_o also_o other_o phrase_n of_o priestly_a right_n before_o kingship_n under_o the_o gospel_n upon_o which_o ground_n we_o must_v say_v also_o of_o the_o first_o head_n of_o church_n the_o apostle_n and_o such_o like_a that_o although_o they_o can_v not_o because_o of_o their_o subjection_n to_o heathen_a king_n make_v much_o use_n of_o their_o power_n in_o government_n over_o man_n person_n yet_o be_v they_o as_o head_n of_o church_n thereunto_o as_o rightful_o empower_v as_o if_o they_o have_v be_v king_n and_o have_v have_v material_a unction_n the_o power_n as_o before_o note_v belong_v to_o christ_n vicar_n and_o not_o to_o the_o notion_n of_o apostle_n king_n or_o the_o like_a but_o in_o after_o time_n among_o the_o jew_n when_o the_o power_n and_o office_n of_o kingship_n do_v succeed_v those_o former_a unction_n of_o power_n do_v now_o resolve_v and_o unite_v into_o this_o which_o be_v of_o high_a eminence_n above_o any_o other_o and_o this_o stile_n of_o god_n anoint_v be_v appropriate_a to_o king_n and_o although_o those_o other_o function_n of_o priest_n and_o prophet_n as_o part_n clip_v from_o the_o entire_a trust_n of_o monarchy_n be_v therefore_o former_o sharer_n in_o this_o unction_n and_o so_o be_v sometime_o material_o anoint_v also_o yet_o for_o that_o their_o anointing_n do_v signify_v but_o some_o particular_a reservation_n of_o trust_n it_o may_v make_v they_o son_n of_o oil_n but_o can_v not_o confer_v on_o they_o the_o eminent_a stile_n of_o the_o lord_n anoint_v which_o in_o the_o first_o place_n be_v due_a to_o the_o christ_n that_o have_v all_o power_n give_v he_o and_o next_o to_o his_o adopt_a christ_n in_o the_o church_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v observe_v in_o sacred_a story_n that_o those_o king_n that_o be_v most_o upright_o in_o their_o office_n and_o trust_n towards_o god_n have_v least_o of_o their_o power_n share_v by_o these_o other_o anoint_a person_n thus_o will_v you_o find_v david_n and_o solomon_n and_o other_o good_a king_n not_o only_o in_o supreme_a power_n and_o exercise_v their_o authority_n without_o impeachment_n of_o these_o other_o anoint_a officer_n but_o also_o some_o of_o they_o prophesy_v themselves_o and_o use_v authority_n over_o the_o priest_n whereas_o in_o the_o time_n of_o jeroboam_n ahab_n and_o such_o like_a you_o shall_v find_v the_o prophet_n in_o great_a power_n and_o most_o intermeddle_v and_o to_o that_o end_n be_v elisha_n anoint_v and_o also_o to_o warn_v these_o king_n and_o people_n from_o take_v such_o course_n as_o may_v draw_v down_o god_n vengeance_n to_o their_o destruction_n and_o so_o proceed_v to_o the_o overthrow_n of_o the_o monarchy_n of_o that_o church_n before_o the_o appoint_a time_n that_o the_o great_a monarch_n of_o the_o christian_a church_n shall_v change_v that_o former_a way_n of_o administration_n and_o as_o we_o before_o note_v the_o first_o style_v prophet_n to_o be_v such_o as_o be_v sharer_n of_o the_o unction_n of_o power_n of_o the_o first_o style_v king_n and_o that_o the_o king_n saul_n david_n and_o solomon_n have_v also_o this_o spirit_n of_o prophecy_n in_o testimony_n of_o their_o right_n thereto_o for_o enable_v they_o in_o their_o office_n of_o government_n so_o shall_v we_o find_v this_o spirit_n of_o jewish_a pprophecy_n to_o expire_v with_o the_o last_o person_n that_o have_v this_o unction_n of_o power_n remain_v namely_o caiphas_n the_o high_a priest_n be_v the_o last_o person_n that_o succeed_v in_o that_o church_n in_o the_o seat_n and_o authority_n of_o moses_n and_o the_o law_n for_o so_o it_o be_v plain_o there_o set_v down_o that_o he_o speak_v not_o this_o of_o himself_o but_o be_v high_a priest_n that_o year_n he_o prophesy_v that_o jesus_n shall_v die_v for_o that_o nation_n 11.51_o etc._n etc._n and_o so_o again_o this_o his_o prophecy_n be_v afterward_o plain_o set_v down_o to_o be_v the_o same_o with_o counsel_n where_o it_o be_v say_v caiphas_n be_v he_o that_o give_v counsel_n to_o the_o jew_n 18.14_o that_o it_o be_v expedient_a that_o one_o man_n shall_v die_v for_o the_o people_n and_o if_o we_o make_v not_o this_o prophetic_a office_n and_o trust_v a_o part_n of_o monarchical_a and_o kingly_a function_n and_o so_o for_o some_o time_n execute_v by_o the_o high_a priest_n i_o see_v not_o how_o any_o footstep_n or_o remain_v of_o the_o government_n and_o sceptre_n of_o judah_n can_v be_v find_v visible_o continue_v until_o the_o come_n of_o our_o saviour_n so_o that_o now_o since_o the_o time_n of_o christ_n unite_n these_o office_n in_o himself_o and_o thereby_o also_o abolish_n the_o necessity_n of_o any_o fix_a ceremonial_a law_n and_o consequent_o of_o any_o external_a priestly_a jurisdiction_n separate_v from_o that_o of_o the_o monarch_n and_o again_o by_o the_o division_n of_o the_o kingdom_n &_o government_n of_o his_o church_n among_o so_o many_o head_n subordinate_a unto_o he_o that_o there_o need_v not_o as_o among_o the_o jew_n where_o be_v but_o one_o nation_n be_v any_o distinct_a settlement_n of_o the_o prophetic_a to_o direct_v against_o the_o overthrow_n of_o kingship_n therein_o there_o seem_v no_o such_o use_n of_o reservation_n because_o if_o one_o or_o two_o shall_v through_o iniquity_n or_o indiscretion_n fail_v yet_o all_o can_v not_o therefore_o it_o can_v now_o be_v reasonable_o contradict_v that_o the_o their_o brethren_n like_v unto_o he_o 18.18_o from_o who_o mouth_n they_o shall_v receive_v all_o god_n command_n by_o which_o word_n of_o a_o prophet_n like_o unto_o i_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v a_o chief_a ruler_n or_o king_n like_o unto_o moses_n for_o the_o notion_n of_o prophet_n separate_o consider_v be_v never_o right_o give_v to_o moses_n and_o so_o do_v nathaniel_n interpret_v this_o prophet_n to_o be_v the_o king_n of_o israel_n and_o general_o 1.49_o so_o do_v that_o whole_a nation_n expound_v it_o also_o as_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o people_n readiness_n to_o make_v he_o a_o king_n 15._o when_o they_o perceive_v he_o be_v that_o great_a prophet_n that_o shall_v come_v into_o the_o world_n whence_o we_o may_v plain_o perceive_v that_o as_o to_o be_v a_o prophet_n in_o chief_a import_v to_o the_o same_o as_o to_o be_v a_o governor_n in_o chief_a so_o be_v the_o governor_n in_o chief_a to_o be_v repute_v and_o obey_v as_o the_o prophet_n or_o instructor_n in_o chief_a prophecy_n signify_v the_o same_o with_o instruction_n and_o instruction_n be_v proper_a to_o person_n in_o authority_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o apostle_n and_o other_o head_n of_o church_n in_o the_o primitive_a time_n have_v this_o power_n over_o person_n miraculous_o gift_v by_o god_n and_o who_o themselves_o have_v not_o set_v up_o in_o authority_n be_v extraordinary_o by_o god_n call_v and_o ordain_v thereunto_o how_o much_o more_o may_v the_o head_n of_o church_n now_o claim_v it_o over_o such_o as_o have_v not_o extraordinary_a revelation_n from_o heaven_n nor_o any_o church_n jurisdiction_n but_o what_o be_v from_o themselves_o derive_v for_o these_o may_v now_o challenge_v as_o supreme_a christian_a head_n of_o each_o church_n the_o reunion_n of_o that_o power_n which_o be_v separately_z by_o other_o christian_a head_n enjoy_v whilst_o they_o be_v none_o and_o upon_o the_o same_o reason_n of_o infidelity_n that_o make_v their_o former_a christian_a subject_n deny_v they_o obedience_n in_o some_o thing_n they_o be_v now_o be_v christian_n to_o claim_v it_o as_o entire_a to_o themselves_o and_o therefore_o as_o we_o before_o note_v the_o apostle_n and_o such_o like_a former_a christian_a head_n to_o have_v sole_a rightful_a power_n whilst_o the_o king_n be_v not_o a_o christian_a and_o that_o he_o be_v but_o a_o usurper_n in_o what_o he_o do_v in_o the_o church_n so_o
have_v he_o not_o put_v they_o in_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o they_o can_v not_o do_v otherwise_o to_o which_o purpose_n as_o job_n in_o the_o fortune_n of_o this_o world_n so_o we_o for_o trial_n of_o our_o faith_n be_v suffer_v to_o have_v tare_n and_o false_a light_n sow_v among_o we_o by_o that_o wicked_a one_o that_o we_o from_o thence_o escape_v may_v arise_v more_o glorious_a in_o the_o praise_n of_o the_o goodness_n and_o power_n of_o that_o god_n to_o who_o glory_n and_o service_n we_o direct_v it_o and_o to_o the_o great_a condemnation_n of_o he_o that_o in_o so_o great_a a_o light_n fall_v away_o nor_o yet_o can_v there_o be_v any_o ground_n take_v from_o thence_o for_o any_o such_o impious_a conjecture_n as_o that_o god_n propose_v these_o light_n and_o truth_n to_o his_o church_n as_o in_o mockery_n and_o with_o direct_a intention_n of_o render_v they_o ineffectual_a through_o obscurity_n and_o not_o as_o true_o and_o sincere_o therein_o purpose_v their_o benefit_n and_o salvation_n for_o we_o may_v confident_o affirm_v that_o the_o discovery_n of_o the_o error_n and_o inconvenience_n of_o atheism_n antichristianism_n uncharitableness_n disobedience_n etc._n etc._n be_v in_o nature_n and_o many_o place_n of_o scripture_n so_o plain_o deliver_v and_o the_o contrary_a truth_n and_o duty_n so_o evident_o express_v and_o assert_v that_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o any_o man_n who_o licentiousness_n have_v not_o prejudice_v and_o prepossessed_n with_o the_o spirit_n of_o infidelity_n rebellion_n malice_n stubornness_n or_o the_o like_a to_o be_v ignorant_a thereof_o upon_o any_o reasonable_a inquiry_n but_o if_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o deprave_a nature_n help_v on_o with_o the_o malice_n of_o that_o wicked_a one_o most_o forward_o to_o sow_v his_o tare_n in_o the_o field_n of_o the_o church_n and_o most_o ready_a to_o enter_v the_o place_n thus_o sweep_v and_o garnish_v do_v so_o common_o keep_v we_o from_o discern_v those_o truth_n and_o duty_n which_o we_o be_v so_o loath_a to_o find_v and_o conceive_v to_o be_v such_o it_o be_v not_o as_o before_o note_v to_o be_v wonder_v at_o and_o to_o come_v near_o our_o own_o present_a business_n by_o instance_n if_o there_o shall_v have_v be_v set_v down_o in_o scripture_n such_o plain_a precept_n for_o settle_v the_o office_n and_o power_n of_o monarchy_n as_o shall_v have_v necessary_o and_o universal_o drive_v man_n to_o implicit_a obedience_n to_o that_o government_n and_o none_o else_o it_o will_v not_o only_o have_v overthrow_v our_o liberty_n and_o render_v all_o man_n equal_o good_a and_o bad_a as_o aforesaid_a but_o also_o have_v endanger_v the_o loss_n of_o god_n honour_n the_o end_n of_o man_n conservation_n whilst_o it_o thus_o for_o peace_n sake_n go_v about_o to_o confer_v it_o too_o close_o and_o absolute_o on_o his_o deputy_n on_o who_o as_o in_o a_o kind_n of_o idolatry_n man_n may_v else_o come_v to_o fix_v those_o express_a return_n of_o thanks_o and_o praise_n which_o to_o god_n himself_o be_v only_o due_a as_o to_o their_o fountain_n and_o original_n these_o lesson_n intend_v as_o well_o to_o enjoin_v obedience_n in_o subject_n to_o who_o all_o place_n of_o obedience_n must_v be_v understand_v as_o to_o take_v off_o arrogance_n in_o prince_n and_o so_o each_o one_o to_o learn_v their_o own_o part_n not_o that_o of_o other_o and_o therefore_o when_o we_o shall_v find_v christ_n so_o obsure_v in_o his_o description_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n or_o heaven_n and_o of_o his_o appear_v as_o to_o give_v occasion_n to_o some_o to_o think_v the_o word_n altogether_o to_o imply_v god_n inward_a kingdom_n or_o christ_n come_v to_o judgement_n at_o the_o last_o day_n and_o not_o his_o glorious_a appearance_n in_o his_o kingdom_n the_o church_n it_o be_v not_o much_o to_o be_v admire_v to_o be_v misconstrue_v and_o that_o construction_n always_o make_v use_n of_o by_o such_o prejudice_v mind_n as_o be_v loath_a to_o examine_v how_o then_o it_o shall_v be_v true_a that_o the_o apostle_n themselves_o shall_v desire_v to_o see_v one_o of_o the_o day_n of_o the_o son_n of_o man_n and_o shall_v not_o see_v it_o 17.22_o it_o be_v unconceivable_a how_o they_o shall_v not_o see_v his_o second_o come_v to_o judgement_n or_o not_o be_v partaker_n of_o his_o glory_n therein_o as_o well_o as_o of_o his_o inward_a speak_v of_o that_o power_n he_o be_v to_o delegate_v and_o leave_v to_o his_o apostle_n even_o so_o that_o he_o not_o only_o forbear_v to_o put_v their_o authority_n under_o the_o plain_a notion_n of_o obedience_n and_o do_v it_o under_o the_o more_o familiar_a term_n of_o hear_v or_o receive_v say_v he_o that_o receive_v 10.16_o or_o hear_v you_o hear_v or_o receive_v i_o but_o also_o whilst_o he_o be_v give_v they_o this_o power_n he_o do_v so_o intermix_v it_o with_o such_o other_o discourse_n that_o may_v seem_v or_o be_v common_a to_o other_o also_o that_o the_o apostle_n themselves_o can_v not_o it_o be_v like_o understand_v the_o plenitude_n of_o their_o own_o power_n until_o after_o his_o resurrection_n that_o he_o have_v particular_o speak_v to_o they_o of_o the_o thing_n pertain_v to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n which_o thing_n be_v the_o proper_a duty_n and_o instruction_n of_o the_o apostle_n only_o 1.3_o be_v the_o reason_n we_o find_v he_o not_o mention_v the_o like_a to_o any_o other_o person_n and_o when_o by_o reason_n of_o this_o obscurity_n s._n peter_n be_v ask_v whether_o themselves_o or_o all_o be_v speak_v to_o he_o neither_o give_v answer_v i_o therefore_o he_o refuse_v to_o act_v as_o a_o christian_a magistrate_n in_o matter_n of_o divine_a precept_n we_o must_v have_v recourse_n to_o god_n command_v ourselves_o or_o to_o such_o god_n from_o meddle_v in_o secular_a affair_n or_o matter_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n do_v thereby_o not_o so_o much_o wrong_n to_o king_n as_o to_o god_n himself_o for_o since_o without_o a_o magistrate_n nothing_o can_v be_v do_v in_o the_o lawmaker_n absence_n all_o law_n of_o religion_n must_v then_o remain_v arbitrary_a and_o useless_a and_o god_n will_v by_o consequent_a be_v as_o well_o thrust_v out_o of_o religious_a power_n as_o direct_o hereby_o exclude_v out_o of_o the_o civil_a so_o that_o when_o that_o or_o the_o precept_n of_o obey_v god_n rather_o than_o man_n be_v to_o be_v take_v of_o direct_a use_n and_o force_n it_o must_v be_v when_o subject_n stand_v subject_v as_o aforesaid_a or_o else_o as_o we_o say_v in_o the_o case_n of_o new_a express_a command_n from_o god_n or_o christ_n himself_o receive_v who_o as_o the_o high_a power_n must_v then_o be_v obey_v as_o in_o that_o particular_a case_n wherein_o this_o sentence_n be_v speak_v may_v appear_v for_o christ_n have_v himself_o particular_o and_o express_o say_v to_o his_o apostle_n go_v teach_v all_o nation_n 9.16_o for_o they_o to_o have_v obey_v magistrate_n forbid_v they_o to_o teach_v any_o more_o in_o his_o name_n have_v be_v express_o to_o have_v obey_v man_n rather_o than_o god_n and_o to_o have_v put_v they_o in_o danger_n of_o woe_n if_o they_o preach_v not_o even_o as_o on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o hearken_v to_o such_o precept_n as_o come_v to_o be_v invent_v and_o press_v by_o private_a man_n contrary_a to_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n public_a minister_n and_o without_o express_a revelation_n therein_o from_o god_n which_o he_o be_v evident_o to_o prove_v be_v as_o do_v against_o god_n command_n to_o obey_v man_n rather_o than_o god_n also_o and_o this_o not_o only_o whether_o the_o doer_n be_v private_a person_n or_o else_o subordinate_a magistrate_n for_o all_o power_n be_v in_o the_o king_n and_o they_o derive_v they_o as_o send_v of_o he_o as_o they_o can_v claim_v obedience_n from_o other_o but_o by_o authority_n from_o he_o so_o they_o must_v as_o private_a person_n in_o respect_n of_o he_o give_v obedience_n to_o he_o by_o who_o power_n under_o god_n they_o have_v this_o their_o jurisdiction_n chap._n xii_o of_o the_o right_n of_o dominion_n have_v hitherto_o speak_v of_o the_o duty_n of_o subjection_n and_o particular_o to_o king_n it_o will_v far_o be_v necessary_a to_o say_v something_o in_o designation_n of_o the_o person_n that_o so_o the_o stubborn_a may_v be_v without_o excuse_n and_o the_o conscientious_a have_v direction_n and_o satisfaction_n as_o far_o as_o may_v be_v what_o to_o follow_v we_o must_v now_o again_o therefore_o consider_v that_o as_o man_n obligation_n of_o praise_n
the_o government_n and_o for_o the_o present_a to_o bring_v ourselves_o into_o such_o confusion_n as_o what_o or_o who_o to_o obey_v be_v uncertain_a then_o only_o i_o suppose_v enquiry_n be_v to_o be_v make_v what_o direction_n for_o well_o settle_v obedience_n can_v follow_v this_o disorder_n in_o which_o case_n as_o man_n must_v be_v first_o presume_v to_o have_v forsake_v the_o command_n of_o god_n and_o king_n and_o all_o that_o have_v power_n above_o they_o so_o be_v now_o to_o be_v suppose_v to_o have_v no_o other_o than_o the_o guide_n of_o nature_n and_o self-interest_n to_o follow_v it_o may_v be_v by_o some_o thought_n that_o what_o be_v before_o show_v as_o allowable_a in_o nature_n in_o the_o deal_n of_o each_o man_n towards_o other_o in_o order_n to_o self-defence_n and_o security_n shall_v be_v warrantable_a to_o each_o faction_n during_o their_o contest_v as_o suppose_v they_o to_o be_v as_o so_o many_o single_a man_n unite_v by_o their_o distinct_a interest_n whereupon_o they_o may_v argue_v that_o as_o each_o one_o be_v by_o nature_n or_o reason_n direct_v and_o warrant_v to_o secure_v itself_o to_o the_o utmost_a against_o fear_n and_o the_o quantity_n of_o that_o fear_n and_o the_o security_n thereupon_o to_o be_v take_v be_v leave_v to_o his_o judgement_n also_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o any_o faction_n may_v herein_o proceed_v even_o to_o the_o death_n or_o other_o overthrow_n of_o its_o opposer_n and_o enemy_n if_o in_o its_o judgement_n his_o own_o preservation_n so_o require_v for_o in_o do_v otherwise_o and_o out_o of_o pity_n only_o spare_v it_o will_v be_v to_o transgress_v the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o reason_n and_o to_o prefer_v the_o sense_n of_o another_o preservation_n before_o its_o own_o therefore_o each_o party_n be_v diverse_o affect_v and_o so_o look_v upon_o each_o other_o as_o enemy_n they_o must_v consequent_o be_v each_o of_o they_o intent_n to_o provide_v for_o their_o own_o security_n and_o whether_o they_o put_v it_o to_o the_o issue_n of_o war_n or_o not_o the_o weak_a be_v necessary_o at_o the_o discretion_n of_o the_o strong_a even_o so_o that_o what_o of_o liberty_n or_o property_n be_v remain_v he_o be_v bind_v in_o gratitude_n to_o the_o other_o as_o of_o a_o free_a gift_n but_o in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v great_a disparity_n for_o the_o single_a man_n have_v a_o separate_a will_n and_o understanding_n by_o nature_n implant_v for_o his_o own_o guide_n and_o security_n even_o as_o all_o other_o natural_a agent_n but_o we_o can_v say_v that_o nature_n have_v so_o unite_v a_o multitude_n of_o any_o sort_n nor_o can_v we_o pick_v out_o any_o example_n among_o creature_n where_o by_o joint_a understanding_n and_o will_n multitude_n do_v command_v multitude_n nor_o can_v they_o so_o do_v with_o any_o colour_n of_o right_n otherwise_o then_o as_o they_o be_v now_o monarchical_a and_o under_o one_o man_n or_o be_v make_v a_o independent_a community_n by_o their_o prince_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v rather_o think_v that_o the_o most_o rational_a course_n that_o in_o this_o case_n can_v be_v take_v to_o recover_v their_o former_a happiness_n and_o peace_n i_o be_o sure_a that_o most_o religious_a and_o conscientious_a it_o be_v that_o they_o return_v to_o the_o same_o form_n of_o government_n and_o obedience_n under_o which_o they_o former_o enjoy_v they_o for_o although_o it_o may_v seem_v for_o the_o present_a tolerable_a for_o each_o faction_n to_o stand_v upon_o term_n of_o safety_n and_o defence_n against_o the_o other_o yet_o since_o the_o destruction_n of_o their_o former_a government_n must_v be_v acknowledge_v unlawful_a they_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o till_o they_o return_v to_o that_o form_n again_o they_o be_v in_o no_o true_a political_a way_n but_o do_v altogether_o depend_v upon_o the_o natural_a way_n of_o continual_a force_n and_o that_o though_o for_o the_o present_a what_o they_o do_v as_o man_n and_o in_o order_n to_o their_o security_n may_v be_v allowable_a yet_o look_v on_o themselves_o as_o christian_n they_o must_v make_v what_o have_v they_o can_v to_o be_v settle_v in_o the_o only_o commend_v and_o right_a form_n again_o as_o know_v their_o present_a action_n have_v no_o ground_n in_o true_a religion_n for_o though_o it_o may_v be_v in_o mere_a nature_n allowable_a for_o their_o whole_a body_n suppose_v as_o one_o man_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o impose_v on_o the_o other_o yet_o since_o they_o can_v never_o be_v true_o one_o in_o interest_n whilst_o not_o act_v by_o one_o man_n command_n it_o will_v still_o fall_v out_o that_o several_a party_n of_o they_o will_v impose_v too_o than_o which_o nothing_o more_o unreasonable_a no_o nor_o unjust_a it_o be_v plain_a partiality_n thus_o to_o prosecute_v the_o design_n and_o interest_n of_o one_o party_n to_o the_o overthrow_n of_o another_o for_o although_o self-love_n be_v natural_a and_o just_a as_o heretofore_o note_v in_o which_o regard_n any_o one_o man_n on_o either_o side_n may_v warrantable_o act_v his_o design_n to_o the_o prejudice_n of_o any_o one_o on_o the_o other_o yet_o since_o none_o of_o the_o particular_a party_n can_v have_v a_o entire_a interest_n it_o must_v therefore_o follow_v that_o in_o act_v all_o the_o other_o interest_n of_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faction_n to_o the_o overthrow_n of_o other_o equal_o his_o neighbour_n he_o be_v partial_a and_o unjust_a have_v in_o nature_n no_o warrant_n to_o love_v one_o man_n better_o than_o another_o this_o injustice_n be_v only_o avoid_v in_o that_o party_n that_o adhere_v to_o a_o monarch_n or_o prince_n and_o so_o join_v with_o he_o in_o his_o entire_a interest_n and_o claim_n do_v all_o of_o they_o act_v but_o as_o one_o person_n whereas_o else_o that_o different_a degree_n of_o love_n or_o hatred_n or_o interest_n which_o each_o person_n on_o the_o one_o side_n bear_v to_o each_o one_o on_o the_o other_o must_v make_v they_o unequal_a and_o unjust_a prosecuter_n so_o that_o although_o in_o case_n of_o self-defence_n against_o a_o unlawful_a invasion_n or_o in_o some_o case_n of_o acquisition_n and_o gain_n it_o may_v be_v for_o the_o present_a allowable_a for_o man_n in_o this_o sort_n to_o unite_v and_o act_v without_o a_o joint_a supreme_a authority_n especial_o where_o it_o can_v for_o the_o present_a be_v have_v yet_o in_o case_n of_o government_n wherein_o a_o constant_a and_o settle_a way_n of_o managery_n of_o this_o common_a security_n and_o stock_n of_o riches_n be_v require_v the_o case_n will_v be_v otherwise_o for_o in_o the_o first_o condition_n each_o one_o may_v be_v suppose_v firm_o and_o uniform_o unite_v and_o equal_o act_v his_o own_o interest_n both_o in_o relation_n to_o self-defence_n and_o gain_n even_o because_o each_o one_o seek_v these_o thing_n in_o the_o high_a measure_n he_o can_v do_v thereupon_o equal_o consider_v each_o one_o on_o the_o oppose_a side_n as_o a_o enemy_n to_o himself_o nor_o do_v look_v on_o those_o of_o his_o fellow_n but_o as_o equal_o his_o friend_n whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n when_o place_n of_o honour_n and_o command_v tend_v to_o common_a security_n or_o the_o common_a revenue_n and_o stock_n of_o a_o nation_n come_v to_o be_v divide_v or_o ascertain_v among_o the_o subject_n themselves_o in_o these_o case_n there_o be_v a_o differ_a enmity_n and_o competition_n necessary_o to_o arise_v about_o the_o distribution_n and_o managery_n of_o these_o office_n and_o propriety_n between_o party_n and_o party_n in_o the_o same_o association_n it_o can_v be_v avoid_v but_o that_o the_o unequal_a ambition_n and_o covetousness_n reside_v in_o the_o several_a person_n must_v make_v they_o without_o a_o common_a unite_a head_n unequal_a and_o unjust_a guide_n and_o distributor_n of_o those_o thing_n wherein_o they_o must_v constant_o have_v such_o partial_a and_o unequal_a respect_n to_o one_o another_o therefore_o i_o conclude_v that_o true_a natural_a reason_n or_o justice_n no_o more_o warrant_v they_o to_o continue_v and_o exercise_v this_o kind_n of_o authority_n in_o show_n of_o a_o lawful_a government_n than_o scripture_n and_o nature_n warrant_v they_o in_o remove_n of_o their_o old_a so_o that_o now_o out_o of_o a_o conscientious_a prudence_n they_o shall_v have_v a_o fellow_n feel_v of_o each_o other_o suffering_n and_o not_o continue_v perpetual_a judge_n over_o such_o as_o they_o can_v have_v no_o jurisdiction_n upon_o they_o be_v not_o now_o to_o think_v they_o have_v right_a to_o continue_v this_o their_o present_a tyranny_n over_o their_o fellow_n for_o none_o other_o it_o be_v when_o government_n be_v exercise_v by_o any_o person_n or_o order_n of_o man_n but_o such_o as_o in_o case_n any_o violence_n shall_v be_v offer_v but_o man_n be_v lead_v to_o misconceive_v of_o action_n of_o this_o nature_n for_o want_v of_o due_a regard_n how_o the_o same_o person_n stand_v accountable_a for_o what_o he_o do_v herein_o according_a to_o that_o different_a condition_n he_o stand_v in_o at_o the_o time_n of_o do_v whosoever_o shall_v oppose_v or_o make_v insurrection_n against_o that_o prince_n that_o be_v in_o present_a possession_n and_o under_o who_o protection_n he_o live_v he_o and_o all_o that_o side_n with_o he_o be_v all_o that_o while_n not_o only_o guilty_a of_o the_o sin_n of_o rebellion_n before_o the_o divine_a tribunal_n but_o before_o that_o political_a tribunal_n also_o wherein_o this_o prince_n do_v preside_v whereas_o all_o those_o that_o do_v assist_v this_o their_o present_a sovereign_n be_v to_o be_v count_v loyal_a both_o by_o law_n of_o god_n and_o man._n but_o if_o divine_a providence_n or_o permission_n have_v give_v such_o success_n to_o any_o subject_n as_o to_o deprive_v the_o present_a prince_n and_o to_o seat_v himself_o in_o the_o regal_a throne_n from_o that_o time_n both_o he_o and_o those_o that_o take_v their_o rebellion_n past_a and_o he_o also_o so_o far_o as_o he_o be_v a_o usurper_n stand_v accountable_a both_o there_o and_o in_o his_o own_o conscience_n for_o all_o those_o injury_n which_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v commit_v in_o his_o present_a usurpation_n as_o well_o by_o himself_o as_o those_o that_o obey_v he_o whereas_o they_o again_o that_o be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o man_n to_o be_v account_v loyal_a to_o the_o former_a prince_n in_o respect_n of_o that_o obedience_n they_o then_o give_v he_o as_o their_o present_a high_a power_n shall_v become_v now_o rebel_n to_o apparent_a but_o then_o again_o although_o those_o that_o now_o take_v part_n with_o the_o present_a power_n be_v to_o be_v account_v loyal_a in_o all_o thy_o do_v in_o his_o obeisance_n whilst_o he_o continue_v their_o sovereign_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a those_o that_o be_v former_o loyal_a be_v now_o to_o be_v hold_v for_o criminal_n for_o what_o they_o act_n contrary_a to_o their_o present_a supremacy_n yet_o be_v they_o to_o be_v look_v upon_o with_o this_o difference_n in_o relation_n to_o their_o act_n past_a those_o that_o be_v loyal_a can_v just_o be_v punish_v by_o he_o that_o succeed_v for_o any_o opposition_n against_o he_o before_o he_o be_v possess_v for_o that_o be_v to_o discourage_v and_o punish_v loyalty_n whereas_o those_o that_o take_v part_n for_o set_v up_o a_o new_a power_n have_v all_o that_o while_o no_o lawful_a authority_n for_o what_o they_o do_v be_v for_o all_o those_o act_n legal_o punishable_a by_o the_o depose_a prince_n in_o case_n he_o shall_v true_a son_n of_o nadab_n and_o abihu_n these_o be_v they_o that_o be_v dear_a declaim_n against_o prelacy_n on_o purpose_n to_o gain_v high_a preferment_n whilst_o the_o name_n of_o bishop_n be_v by_o they_o decline_v as_o a_o unlawful_a jurisdiction_n in_o in_o the_o church_n they_o be_v grasp_a after_o the_o thing_n and_o strive_v to_o exercise_v eepiscopacy_n and_o oversight_n over_o both_o here_o be_v both_o to_o be_v free_a and_o unmolested_a in_o the_o wilderness_n of_o this_o life_n and_o also_o to_o bear_v on_o he_o all_o the_o iniquity_n and_o transgression_n of_o the_o people_n 16.21_o for_o although_o christ_n himself_o typify_v under_o the_o slay_a goat_n do_v only_o true_o and_o meritorious_o expiate_v and_o make_v atonement_n to_o god_n for_o all_o man_n sin_n as_o
