which_o the_o controversy_n do_v depend_v it_o will_v therefore_o be_v needless_a to_o make_v any_o observation_n on_o what_o this_o author_n offer_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o his_o four_o first_o point_n unless_o he_o happen_v to_o mistake_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n which_o he_o bring_v in_o under_o these_o head_n or_o misapply_v what_o he_o have_v to_o say_v on_o these_o point_n to_o that_o treatise_n or_o some_o passage_n in_o it_o this_o author_n bestow_v his_o seven_o page_n in_o set_v down_o a_o objection_n that_o have_v some_o be_v one_o of_o that_o party_n now_o i_o think_v there_o be_v not_o a_o absolute_a promise_n of_o salvation_n in_o all_o the_o scripture_n and_o that_o if_o there_o be_v such_o a_o promise_n there_o can_v not_o be_v any_o thing_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v unto_o salvation_n for_o a_o answer_n to_o this_o viz._n objection_n speak_v of_o before_o it_o will_v say_v this_o author_n be_v material_a to_o examine_v first_o whether_o nothing_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n but_o what_o be_v declare_v to_o be_v so_o or_o whether_o any_o doctrine_n upon_o which_o salvation_n be_v propose_v be_v single_o of_o itself_o sufficient_a for_o it_o p._n 8._o he_o immediate_o add_v this_o seem_v to_o be_v a_o query_n of_o no_o small_a importance_n here_o i_o will_v 1._o propound_v some_o reason_n why_o it_o may_v be_v just_o affirm_v that_o a_o due_a believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n or_o messiah_n do_v constitute_v and_o make_v man_n christian_n 2._o i_o will_v consider_v what_o this_o author_n propound_v to_o be_v examine_v 3._o i_o will_v take_v notice_n of_o what_o this_o author_n have_v here_o write_v upon_o this_o point_n first_o i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o reason_n why_o it_o may_v be_v just_o affirm_v that_o a_o due_a believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n or_o christ_n do_v constitute_v and_o make_v a_o belief_n of_o any_o other_o gospel-doctrine_n together_o with_o this_o as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n 3._o because_o salvation_n be_v not_o promise_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o any_o one_o or_o number_n of_o doctrine_n separately_z from_o this_o doctrine_n 4._o because_o no_o other_o doctrine_n christ_n or_o his_o apostle_n have_v teach_v can_v be_v believe_v aright_o but_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o person_n believe_v this_o doctrine_n let_v a_o man_n believe_v all_o the_o doctrine_n deliver_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n upon_o consideration_n pure_o distinct_a from_o this_o that_o they_o be_v doctrine_n teach_v by_o jesus_n christ_n who_o he_o have_v receive_v for_o his_o lord_n he_o do_v not_o believe_v they_o as_o a_o christian_a ought_v to_o believe_v they_o nor_o will_v his_o belief_n of_o they_o on_o those_o account_n at_o all_o avail_v he_o as_o to_o salvation_n by_o virtue_n of_o any_o promise_n in_o the_o gospel_n he_o that_o believe_v any_o of_o these_o doctrine_n with_o the_o faith_n of_o a_o christian_a or_o
more_o particular_o here_o be_v three_o distinct_a question_n to_o be_v consider_v 1._o whether_o nothing_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n but_o what_o god_n have_v go_v together_o and_o salvation_n be_v not_o promise_v to_o one_o alone_a for_o though_o the_o believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n can_v be_v without_o the_o former_a yet_o the_o former_a may_v be_v without_o the_o latter_a moreover_o there_o be_v something_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n which_o no_o man_n nor_o church_n can_v particular_o determine_v what_o it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n can_v rational_o believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n but_o he_o must_v first_o have_v or_o understand_v some_o evidence_n and_o proof_n that_o he_o be_v the_o messiah_n but_o man_n can_v determine_v upon_o what_o proof_n a_o man_n must_v necessary_o believe_v it_o because_o god_n have_v provide_v man_n with_o great_a store_n of_o eminent_a proof_n proper_a to_o convince_v they_o that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n and_o have_v not_o bind_v up_o himself_o that_o he_o will_v not_o give_v forth_o his_o effectual_a influence_n and_o blessing_n article_n prove_v be_v express_v by_o believe_v the_o argument_n which_o prove_v it_o 3._o whether_o any_o doctrine_n upon_o the_o believe_a of_o which_o salvation_n be_v promise_v be_v single_o of_o itself_o sufficient_a for_o salvation_n i_o answer_v salvation_n be_v not_o promise_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o any_o one_o doctrine_n consider_v single_o in_o itself_o yet_o salvation_n may_v have_v be_v promise_v to_o those_o who_o sincere_o believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n upon_o their_o believe_v certain_a other_o doctrine_n and_o the_o belief_n of_o those_o doctrine_n not_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n as_o a_o person_n may_v believe_v a_o doctrine_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n and_o yet_o have_v no_o true_a title_n to_o salvation_n because_o salvation_n be_v never_o promise_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o that_o doctrine_n alone_o so_o salvation_n may_v have_v be_v promise_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o certain_a doctrine_n and_o yet_o a_o person_n may_v be_v save_v though_o he_o do_v never_o attain_v explicit_o to_o know_v and_o believe_v those_o doctrine_n because_o the_o explicit_a belief_n of_o they_o be_v not_o make_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n the_o main_a if_o not_o the_o whole_a excellency_n and_o dignity_n of_o a_o person_n be_v believe_v the_o particular_a doctrine_n deliver_v or_o teach_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o be_v believe_v by_o christian_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o that_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o submission_n or_o obedience_n to_o that_o jesus_n they_o have_v receive_v to_o be_v their_o lord_n as_o a_o man_n may_v believe_v in_o the_o true_a god_n and_o yet_o not_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o may_v miss_v of_o salvation_n because_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v all_o that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n so_o a_o man_n may_v believe_v several_a doctrine_n teach_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n and_o not_o believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n and_o so_o may_v miss_v of_o salvation_n because_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v all_o that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n though_o the_o promise_n of_o salvation_n have_v be_v annex_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o those_o doctrine_n in_o they_o who_o do_v unfeigned_o believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o christ_n and_o who_o believe_v they_o in_o obedience_n to_o he_o but_o salvation_n be_v not_o promise_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o any_o doctrine_n which_o do_v not_o suppose_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n three_o i_o will_v now_o take_v some_o notice_n of_o what_o this_o author_n do_v say_v to_o these_o matter_n if_o this_o say_v he_o be_v make_v the_o only_a rule_n whereby_o to_o judge_v of_o fundamental_o viz._n a_o doctrine_n be_v express_o declare_v to_o be_v necessary_a to_o be_v actual_o believe_v to_o salvation_n we_o shall_v i_o fear_v by_o this_o mean_n raise_v several_a exception_n against_o a_o great_a part_n of_o religion_n p._n 8._o answ._n the_o question_n here_o be_v by_o what_o rule_n we_o be_v to_o judge_v what_o article_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n or_o to_o salvation_n the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n say_v the_o rule_n we_o must_v judge_v of_o this_o matter_n by_o be_v the_o declaration_n god_n have_v make_v of_o his_o determination_n concern_v this_o matter_n by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n no_o say_v this_o author_n and_o his_o reason_n be_v he_o fear_v then_o man_n will_v raise_v several_a exception_n against_o a_o great_a part_n of_o religion_n i_o do_v not_o know_v what_o man_n will_v do_v but_o the_o question_n will_v be_v whether_o they_o will_v then_o raise_v just_a exception_n against_o a_o great_a part_n of_o religion_n our_o fear_n must_v not_o rob_v god_n of_o his_o right_n but_o i_o be_o certain_a by_o keep_v close_o to_o god_n declaration_n no_o just_a exception_n can_v be_v raise_v against_o any_o one_o part_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n what_o this_o author_n say_v after_o concern_v matter_n of_o faith_n and_o of_o practice_n i_o think_v be_v full_o answer_v in_o the_o second_o vindication_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n etc._n etc._n p._n 83_o 84._o and_o thither_o i_o refer_v the_o reader_n for_o satisfaction_n if_o he_o need_v any_o i_o shall_v only_o observe_v that_o salvation_n be_v not_o promise_v in_o the_o new_a testament_n to_o any_o matter_n of_o faith_n or_o practice_n but_o but_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o belief_n of_o this_o article_n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n let_v any_o man_n produce_v a_o promise_n of_o salvation_n to_o a_o unbeliever_n if_o he_o can_v upon_o his_o believe_v any_o other_o doctrine_n or_o perform_v any_o matter_n of_o practice_n consider_v separately_z from_o his_o believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n salvatition_n be_v not_o promise_v to_o any_o but_o those_o who_o believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n and_o when_o it_o be_v promise_v to_o such_o with_o relation_n to_o other_o matter_n the_o promise_n than_o have_v a_o respect_n to_o that_o article_n to_o which_o it_o be_v primary_o promise_v and_o respect_v those_o other_o matter_n as_o fruit_n effect_n and_o evidence_n of_o their_o sincere_a believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n except_o where_o the_o promise_n respect_v not_o salvation_n in_o general_n but_o degree_n of_o happiness_n or_o glory_n if_o in_o matter_n of_o faith_n say_v this_o author_n nothing_o be_v to_o be_v require_v for_o a_o fundamental_a but_o what_o be_v so_o propose_v and_o to_o which_o salvation_n be_v express_o annex_v and_o promise_v it_o will_v very_o probable_o make_v way_n for_o a_o very_a unintelligible_a faith_n in_o which_o christian_n can_v
not_o possible_o agree_v answ._n here_o the_o author_n seem_v to_o speak_v concern_v the_o doctrine_n which_o those_o who_o be_v christian_n must_v endeavour_v to_o understand_v and_o believe_v and_o if_o so_o it_o be_v beside_o the_o question_n but_o that_o people_n keep_v close_o to_o god_n declaration_n either_o as_o to_o doctrine_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n or_o as_o to_o doctrine_n they_o be_v to_o believe_v afterward_o have_v a_o probable_a tendency_n to_o make_v way_n for_o a_o very_a unintelligible_a faith_n be_v very_o strange_a to_o i_o be_v the_o sure_a way_n to_o have_v the_o most_o intelligible_a faith_n for_o people_n to_o go_v as_o far_o as_o they_o can_v from_o god_n express_a declaration_n there_o will_v be_v some_o difference_n indeed_o among_o christian_n as_o to_o the_o particular_a doctrine_n they_o believe_v some_o believe_v more_o article_n some_o few_o and_o this_o must_v needs_o be_v till_o they_o be_v all_o equal_a in_o their_o knowledge_n yet_o in_o the_o way_n except_v against_o they_o will_v every_o one_o be_v oblige_v to_o believe_v and_o practice_v according_a to_o the_o extent_n of_o their_o knowledge_n and_o to_o agree_v in_o faith_n and_o practice_n so_o far_o as_o they_o do_v in_o knowledge_n and_o let_v people_n advance_v what_o notion_n they_o please_v concern_v what_o article_n be_v necessary_a to_o make_v man_n christian_n they_o can_v rational_o agree_v any_o further_a than_o they_o will_v this_o way_n unless_o they_o must_v all_o be_v stake_v down_o to_o believe_v just_a one_o set_v of_o doctrine_n without_o extend_v their_o endeavour_n after_o knowledge_n any_o further_o and_o if_o this_o be_v a_o way_n to_o prevent_v peoples_n raise_v exception_n against_o a_o great_a part_n of_o religion_n i_o can_v excuse_v it_o from_o do_v unsufferable_a wrong_n to_o a_o great_a part_n of_o religion_n in_o believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n so_o as_o to_o take_v he_o for_o our_o lord_n and_o king_n we_o yield_v up_o ourselves_o entire_o to_o he_o to_o believe_v and_o practice_v whatsoever_o we_o shall_v know_v he_o have_v teach_v and_o command_v and_o therefore_o absolute_o impossible_a for_o though_o the_o word_n may_v be_v a_o proposition_n to_o he_o who_o utter_v they_o and_o to_o those_o who_o understand_v they_o they_o be_v no_o proposition_n to_o he_o who_o never_o hear_v nor_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o can_v be_v assent_v to_o by_o he_o by_o explication_n of_o it_o this_o author_n here_o seem_v to_o mean_v proper_a which_o the_o proposition_n be_v first_o of_o all_o deliver_v or_o declare_v by_o other_o word_n in_o the_o same_o language_n the_o several_a simple_a idea_n of_o which_o those_o complex_fw-la ideas_n be_v make_v up_o for_o the_o express_v of_o which_o those_o term_n be_v use_v yet_o in_o the_o next_o page_n he_o seem_v to_o understand_v by_o explication_n all_o those_o doctrine_n which_o be_v deliver_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n that_o either_o relate_v the_o ground_n and_o reason_n why_o we_o be_v to_o believe_v the_o proposition_n he_o speak_v of_o of_o such_o a_o faith_n which_o be_v require_v to_o salvation_n and_o that_o explain_v the_o nature_n and_o extent_n of_o it_o if_o this_o author_n be_v of_o opinion_n that_o the_o explicit_a belief_n of_o all_o the_o ground_n and_o world_n with_o endless_a wrangling_n and_o distraction_n for_o i_o suspect_v all_o people_n will_v not_o present_o agree_v how_o many_o the_o text_n be_v and_o which_o they_o be_v which_o relate_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o former_a and_o can_v at_o all_o invalidate_n but_o may_v very_o much_o confirm_v it_o but_o if_o he_o who_o undertake_v to_o prove_v the_o latter_a do_v let_v fall_v passage_n which_o reflect_v on_o the_o former_a proposition_n those_o passage_n have_v real_o the_o same_o ill_a aspect_n with_o relation_n to_o his_o own_o proposition_n they_o have_v to_o the_o other_o the_o whole_a amount_n to_o no_o more_o than_o if_o one_o shall_v declare_v that_o all_o that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n or_o to_o salvation_n be_v deliver_v in_o the_o epistle_n and_o another_o out_o of_o a_o sort_n of_o zeal_n for_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o act_n shall_v profess_o oppose_v that_o proposition_n and_o publish_v a_o book_n to_o prove_v that_o the_o gospel_n and_o act_n be_v part_n of_o the_o rule_n of_o save_v faith_n but_o when_o the_o question_n be_v this_o see_v the_o doctrine_n absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n be_v lay_v down_o both_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o act_n and_o in_o the_o epistle_n in_o what_o part_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n may_v it_o be_v best_a discern_v which_o be_v the_o doctrine_n that_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n then_o certain_a reason_n may_v be_v assign_v why_o they_o may_v be_v better_o discern_v by_o consult_v the_o gospel_n and_o act_n than_o the_o epistle_n people_n misrepresent_v a_o good_a book_n may_v be_v derive_v from_o various_a original_n as_o wilfulness_n inadvertence_n weakness_n prepossession_n etc._n etc._n i_o will_v not_o suspect_v that_o the_o author_n of_o the_o animadversion_n late_o print_v at_o oxford_n on_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n as_o deliver_v in_o the_o scriputer_n have_v misrepresent_v that_o excellent_a treatise_n through_o a_o indulgence_n to_o any_o thing_n for_o which_o he_o may_v be_v just_o blame_v because_o he_o write_v for_o the_o most_o part_n with_o so_o much_o temper_v and_o have_v make_v a_o profession_n in_o the_o close_a of_o his_o preface_n so_o every_o way_n become_v a_o worthy_a and_o good_a christian._n but_o if_o i_o understand_v the_o true_a mean_v of_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n as_o express_v in_o that_o treatise_n it_o be_v mighty_o misrepresent_v in_o those_o animadversion_n how_o innocent_a and_o harmless_a soever_o the_o author_n may_v be_v in_o what_o he_o have_v do_v that_o i_o may_v do_v both_o these_o author_n all_o the_o right_o i_o be_o able_a i_o will_v observe_v all_o along_o wherein_o they_o do_v agree_v and_o give_v as_o true_a impartial_a and_o distinct_a a_o account_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n as_o i_o can_v in_o those_o point_n treat_v of_o especial_o in_o the_o first_o and_o three_o part_n of_o these_o animadversion_n and_o take_v some_o notice_n of_o what_o this_o author_n have_v offer_v against_o what_o he_o have_v allege_v out_o of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n and_o that_o i_o may_v proceed_v the_o more_o orderly_o i_o will_v begin_v my_o observation_n where_o the_o author_n of_o the_o animadversion_n begin_v he_o viz._n p._n 1._o of_o his_o preface_n where_o he_o declare_v his_o agreement_n with_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n that_o the_o most_o rational_a mean_n of_o silence_v all_o religious_a controversy_n be_v to_o take_v the_o scripture_n for_o the_o only_a rule_n of_o faith_n this_o i_o apprehend_v be_v a_o true_a account_n of_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n concern_v this_o matter_n and_o i_o conceive_v he_o agree_v with_o the_o author_n of_o the_o animadversion_n in_o the_o main_a of_o that_o reason_n which_o he_o have_v annex_v to_o that_o proposition_n though_o to_o express_v what_o i_o apprehend_v a_o more_o clear_a and_o full_a account_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o author_n of_o the_o reasonableness_n of_o christianity_n etc._n etc._n i_o will_v take_v the_o liberty_n to_o word_n it_o in_o some_o place_n otherwise_o than_o this_o author_n have_v do_v and_o to_o add_v one_o passage_n or_o clause_n he_o have_v not_o insert_v for_o there_o may_v be_v some_o probable_a ground_n to_o hope_v for_o a_o happy_a conclusion_n of_o all_o dispute_n in_o religion_n if_o all_o party_n will_v join_v issue_n in_o this_o that_o no_o christian_n ought_v to_o be_v require_v to_o believe_v any_o thing_n but_o what_o be_v enjoin_v by_o the_o clear_a and_o express_v declaration_n of_o scripture_n nor_o any_o thing_n so_o enjoin_v till_o it_o be_v make_v appear_v to_o he_o that_o it_o be_v so_o enjoin_v and_o that_o no_o christian_n may_v reject_v or_o withhold_v his_o assent_n from_o any_o article_n which_o appear_v to_o he_o to_o be_v plain_o deliver_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n the_o clause_n i_o shall_v add_v be_v this_o that_o nothing_o aught_o to_o be_v require_v to_o be_v believe_v as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v man_n christian_n but_o what_o be_v enjoin_v by_o the_o clear_a and_o express_a declaration_n of_o scripture_n to_o be_v believe_v for_o that_o purpose_n and_o i_o add_v this_o clause_n for_o this_o reason_n among_o other_o because_o whoever_o impose_v on_o people_n certain_a doctrine_n though_o the_o doctrine_n be_v real_o christ_n doctrine_n as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n which_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n have_v not_o declare_v to_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n do_v as_o real_o advance_v a_o foreign_a authority_n and_o set_v it_o up_o equal_o with_o christ_n as_o he_o do_v who_o impose_v any_o thing_n as_o a_o necessary_a part_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n which_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n never_o make_v a_o part_n of_o it_o for_o notwithstanding_o the_o
as_o a_o christian_a be_v to_o believe_v they_o do_v but_o repeat_v or_o re-act_n his_o belief_n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o christ_n with_o a_o precise_a determination_n of_o that_o belief_n to_o those_o doctrine_n as_o know_v and_o consider_v to_o be_v teach_v by_o christ._n now_o if_o a_o man_n can_v believe_v any_o of_o these_o doctrine_n as_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v believe_v or_o for_o that_o reason_n for_o which_o they_o be_v to_o be_v believe_v till_o he_o be_v a_o christian_n with_o what_o consistency_n can_v it_o be_v pretend_v that_o the_o belief_n of_o any_o of_o these_o doctrine_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_a upon_o what_o evidence_n upon_o what_o authority_n must_v a_o man_n believe_v any_o of_o these_o doctrine_n to_o make_v he_o a_o christian_a they_o be_v not_o part_n of_o natural_a religion_n will_v a_o man_n believe_v they_o in_o submission_n to_o humane_a authority_n make_v he_o a_o christian_a if_o it_o be_v say_v he_o must_v believe_v they_o upon_o christ_n authority_n who_o have_v reveal_v they_o than_o he_o must_v first_o of_o all_o believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n or_o christ_n and_o so_o as_o to_o take_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n if_o it_o shall_v be_v say_v that_o be_v grant_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v affirm_v that_o that_o belief_n be_v the_o first_o act_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o first_o step_v to_o christian_a faith_n but_o that_o faith_n do_v not_o constitute_v or_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n till_o it_o be_v complete_v and_o grow_v up_o to_o a_o certain_a size_n by_o additional_a act_n of_o faith_n believe_v a_o precise_a number_n of_o article_n more_o it_o may_v then_o be_v ask_v what_o we_o be_v to_o call_v or_o what_o we_o must_v understand_v by_o that_o faith_n of_o which_o believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n be_v the_o first_o act_n it_o be_v say_v it_o be_v not_o christian_a faith_n and_o if_o it_o be_v proper_o say_v to_o be_v a_o act_n of_o faith_n what_o name_v soever_o shall_v be_v give_v to_o it_o it_o must_v be_v antecedent_n to_o what_o be_v but_o the_o act_n of_o it_o but_o how_o it_o can_v be_v a_o act_n of_o christian_a faith_n and_o yet_o but_o a_o step_v to_o christian_a faith_n have_v some_o more_o difficulty_n in_o it_o but_o further_a it_o may_v be_v inquire_v if_o the_o due_a believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n do_v not_o constitute_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n how_o can_v the_o limit_a exercise_v of_o this_o faith_n with_o respect_n to_o a_o certain_a number_n of_o doctrine_n constitute_v he_o a_o christian_a when_o all_o or_o the_o main_a excellency_n of_o his_o believe_v those_o doctrine_n be_v derive_v from_o his_o believe_a jesus_fw-la to_o be_v christ_n do_v a_o creature_n be_v be_v endue_v with_o reason_n make_v he_o a_o rational_a creature_n or_o his_o exert_n and_o exercise_v his_o reason_n to_o certain_a degree_n about_o a_o precise_a number_n of_o object_n again_o it_o may_v be_v query_v not_o only_o what_o be_v those_o additional_a article_n but_o upon_o who_o authority_n or_o for_o what_o reason_n must_v they_o be_v believe_v to_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n 5._o because_o it_o be_v only_o the_o due_a belief_n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o christ_n which_o do_v or_o can_v constitute_v a_o person_n a_o true_a disciple_n or_o subject_n of_o christ._n the_o belief_n of_o all_o the_o other_o doctrine_n in_o the_o bible_n take_v separately_z from_o this_o will_v not_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n for_o if_o it_o will_v a_o man_n may_v be_v a_o christian_n though_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ._n and_o so_o believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n can_v neither_o be_v the_o first_o act_n as_o be_v say_v of_o christian_n faith_n nor_o a_o absolute_o necessary_a step_v to_o christian_a faith_n add_v the_o belief_n of_o all_o other_o doctrine_n in_o the_o bible_n to_o the_o belief_n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o christ_n they_o can_v make_v the_o man_n a_o christian._n the_o additional_a belief_n be_v but_o evidence_n and_o proof_n that_o he_o do_v believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n so_o as_o to_o take_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n and_o if_o a_o due_a belief_n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o christ_n do_v not_o constitute_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n all_o other_o belief_n be_v so_o far_o from_o constitute_v he_o a_o christian_a it_o will_v not_o amount_v to_o a_o proof_n that_o he_o be_v a_o christian._n a_o due_a believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n or_o christ_n be_v the_o grand_a principle_n of_o a_o christian_n belief_n and_o practice_n as_o to_o all_o the_o particular_a doctrine_n of_o faith_n and_o rule_n of_o good_a live_v lay_v down_o by_o christ_n in_o the_o whole_a scripture_n this_o bring_v the_o person_n under_o a_o indispensable_a obligation_n to_o endeavour_v serious_o to_o know_v what_o christ_n have_v deliver_v both_o as_o to_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o this_o oblige_v he_o to_o believe_v whatsoever_o doctrine_n he_o shall_v attain_v to_o know_v christ_n have_v teach_v and_o to_o perform_v and_o practise_v whatsoever_o he_o shall_v attain_v to_o know_v christ_n have_v make_v his_o duty_n it_o be_v this_o that_o preserve_v to_o all_o the_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n and_o rule_n of_o practice_n deliver_v to_o we_o in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n their_o full_a force_n and_o obligation_n hereby_o we_o perceive_v they_o to_o be_v the_o doctrine_n and_o law_n of_o he_o we_o have_v receive_v for_o our_o lord_n who_o we_o be_v on_o that_o account_n to_o believe_v and_o obey_v in_o every_o thing_n we_o understand_v be_v his_o declare_a will._n second_o i_o will_v now_o consider_v what_o this_o author_n propound_v to_o be_v examine_v viz._n whether_o nothing_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n but_o what_o be_v declare_v to_o be_v so_o or_o whether_o any_o doctrine_n upon_o which_o salvation_n be_v propose_v be_v single_o of_o itself_o sufficient_a for_o it_o here_o be_v two_o question_n propose_v as_o if_o they_o be_v but_o one_o different_o word_v i_o will_v say_v something_o in_o general_a touch_v this_o matter_n and_o then_o speak_v more_o particular_o to_o it_o in_o general_n i_o shall_v observe_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o a_o doctrine_n be_v declare_v to_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n 2._o salvation_n be_v promise_v to_o what_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n 3._o salvation_n be_v promise_v to_o the_o belief_n of_o something_o but_o not_o under_o this_o precise_a consideration_n as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v to_o salvation_n to_o believe_v in_o the_o only_a true_a god_n be_v declare_v to_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n and_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v believe_v a_o right_n that_o jesus_n be_v the_o messiah_n without_o believe_v in_o the_o only_a true_a god_n for_o a_o man_n can_v believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v send_v by_o the_o true_a god_n and_o be_v constitute_v king_n by_o he_o except_o he_o believe_v in_o that_o god_n who_o do_v send_v he_o etc._n etc._n now_o notwithstanding_o this_o belief_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n or_o to_o salvation_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o make_v he_o a_o christian_a nor_o be_v salvation_n promise_v to_o it_o salvation_n be_v promise_v to_o that_o faith_n which_o do_v make_v a_o man_n a_o christian_n which_o be_v believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n or_o messiah_n so_o as_o to_o take_v he_o for_o our_o lord_n but_o salvation_n be_v not_o propose_v to_o any_o upon_o their_o believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o christ_n but_o only_o those_o who_o first_o of_o all_o acknowledge_v their_o belief_n in_o the_o true_a and_o living_n god_n and_o therefore_o those_o who_o do_v not_o believe_v in_o the_o only_a true_a god_n be_v always_o instruct_v concern_v the_o true_a god_n and_o call_v on_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o before_o salvation_n be_v promise_v to_o they_o upon_o their_o believe_a jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n if_o salvation_n be_v promise_v upon_o the_o believe_a of_o other_o point_n or_o to_o any_o matter_n of_o practice_n it_o be_v not_o promise_v to_o those_o matter_n as_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v etc._n etc._n unto_o salvation_n but_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v with_o respect_n to_o those_o matter_n to_o they_o who_o do_v already_o believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n some_o thing_n be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n to_o which_o no_o promise_n of_o salvation_n be_v make_v and_o salvation_n may_v be_v promise_v to_o some_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n
necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v by_o all_o christian_n but_o if_o that_o can_v be_v do_v it_o will_v signify_v little_a to_o the_o present_a purpose_n it_o be_v acknowledge_v that_o there_o be_v very_o many_o doctrine_n which_o those_o who_o be_v christian_n be_v oblige_v to_o use_v their_o best_a endeavour_n to_o understand_v explicit_o and_o then_o believe_v and_o that_o some_o of_o these_o doctrine_n be_v not_o express_o deliver_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o also_o that_o some_o of_o those_o doctrine_n which_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o act_n be_v more_o full_o express_v and_o explain_v in_o the_o epistle_n but_o the_o proof_n be_v yet_o want_v that_o the_o explicit_a belief_n of_o every_o one_o of_o these_o doctrine_n and_o the_o full_a explanation_n of_o they_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o make_v man_n christian_n and_o before_o they_o can_v all_o be_v prove_v to_o be_v doctrine_n which_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v for_o this_o purpose_n their_o number_n must_v be_v precise_o determine_v and_o a_o particular_a account_n must_v be_v give_v of_o every_o one_o of_o they_o for_o can_v any_o thing_n be_v more_o absurd_a than_o to_o pretend_v to_o prove_v that_o people_n must_v necessary_o believe_v and_o believe_v explicit_o no_o one_o know_v what_o to_o make_v they_o christian_n but_o suppose_v some_o person_n will_v undertake_v to_o draw_v out_o a_o full_a and_o just_a scheme_n of_o the_o doctrine_n he_o will_v affirm_v be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v explicit_o believe_v to_o make_v man_n christian_n without_o wait_v for_o his_o proof_n that_o the_o belief_n of_o every_o one_o of_o they_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a and_o that_o there_o be_v not_o one_o more_o absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v believe_v for_o that_o purpose_n for_o i_o doubt_v either_o his_o collection_n or_o his_o proof_n will_v not_o immediate_o satisfy_v all_o party_n i_o will_v propose_v two_o or_o three_o question_n to_o be_v consider_v which_o i_o think_v not_o altogether_o impertinent_a to_o the_o present_a purpose_n when_o a_o man_n be_v convince_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o christ_n and_o that_o it_o be_v both_o his_o duty_n and_o his_o interest_n to_o receive_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n to_o believe_v and_o do_v whatsoever_o he_o shall_v attain_v to_o know_v he_o have_v teach_v and_o command_v must_v he_o delay_v and_o forbear_v to_o receive_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n till_o he_o have_v seek_v out_o and_o learn_v a_o certain_a number_n of_o his_o doctrine_n if_o he_o must_v not_o so_o delay_v but_o immediate_o take_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n and_o open_o avow_v and_o prosess_v that_o he_o do_v believe_v jesus_n to_o be_v the_o messiah_n and_o own_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n what_o denomination_n belong_v proper_o to_o he_o upon_o his_o make_v this_o profession_n the_o denomination_n which_o belong_v to_o he_o former_o do_v not_o i_o suppose_v proper_o belong_v to_o he_o now_o he_o have_v renounce_v public_o his_o former_a master_n and_o declare_v he_o be_v peremptory_o resolve_v to_o cleave_v to_o and_o follow_v jesus_n christ_n without_o any_o reservation_n if_o it_o shall_v be_v say_v he_o must_v defer_v his_o resigning_n up_o himself_o to_o christ_n till_o he_o have_v learn_v a_o certain_a number_n or_o perhaps_o with_o equal_a reason_n all_o the_o doctrine_n christ_n have_v teach_v not_o only_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o act_n but_o in_o the_o epistle_n too_o i_o will_v humble_o ask_v for_o what_o reason_n must_v he_o so_o long_o defer_v the_o resignation_n of_o himself_o to_o christ_n i_o suppose_v not_o because_o he_o have_v assurance_n he_o shall_v live_v long_o enough_o to_o do_v that_o after_o he_o have_v take_v some_o or_o all_o of_o his_o doctrine_n to_o task_n and_o have_v have_v they_o under_o his_o examination_n must_v he_o first_o of_o all_o fit_a in_o judgement_n upon_o christ_n doctrine_n and_o see_v whether_o they_o be_v reasonable_a and_o fit_a and_o convenient_a for_o he_o to_o assent_v to_o and_o that_o he_o shall_v act_v wise_o and_o prudent_o to_o take_v the_o author_n of_o they_o for_o his_o lord_n if_o so_o how_o shall_v it_o be_v make_v appear_v that_o such_o a_o person_n receive_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n as_o christ_n order_n and_o consequent_o that_o he_o be_v a_o christian_n in_o the_o gospel_n sense_n be_v his_o believe_v those_o doctrine_n before_o he_o take_v christ_n for_o his_o lord_n a_o believe_v they_o as_o a_o christian_a shall_v and_o must_v believe_v they_o pure_o for_o his_o sake_n or_o because_o he_o have_v teach_v they_o see_v he_o must_v first_o know_v and_o believe_v they_o before_o he_o adventure_v to_o receive_v he_o for_o his_o lord_n and_o trust_v he_o with_o his_o faith_n in_o this_o case_n his_o believe_v these_o doctrine_n seem_v rather_o the_o reason_n of_o his_o take_n christ_n for_o his_o lord_n than_o christ_n authority_n the_o reason_n of_o his_o believe_v those_o doctrine_n our_o bless_a saviour_n tell_v we_o plain_o with_o what_o disposition_n we_o must_v receive_v he_o for_o our_o lord_n so_o as_o if_o any_o thing_n he_o shall_v require_v we_o to_o believe_v or_o obey_v can_v be_v acknowledge_v or_o perform_v without_o expose_v we_o to_o the_o great_a temporal_a inconvenience_n and_o hazard_n we_o must_v sustain_v and_o encounter_v they_o and_o deny_v ourselves_o to_o the_o lay_v down_o of_o our_o life_n rather_o than_o relinquish_v our_o fidelity_n to_o he_o but_o i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o he_o any_o where_o require_v we_o will_v go_v to_o work_v with_o his_o doctrine_n and_o then_o if_o we_o like_v they_o come_v and_o submit_v to_o he_o and_o take_v he_o for_o our_o lord_n beside_o how_o man_n can_v be_v say_v to_o believe_v these_o doctrine_n as_o teach_v by_o he_o who_o be_v the_o messiah_n or_o christ_n before_o they_o believe_v he_o to_o be_v the_o christ_n and_o have_v yield_v up_o themselves_o to_o he_o to_o believe_v what_o he_o have_v teach_v be_v not_o very_o intelligible_a to_o i_o nor_o how_o a_o man_n be_v believe_v any_o thing_n christ_n have_v teach_v pure_o because_o he_o have_v teach_v it_o can_v make_v he_o christ_n
