as_o in_o the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o express_a mention_n of_o any_o such_o place_n as_o purgatory_n be_v and_o the_o apostle_n have_v give_v we_o no_o instruction_n touch_v the_o same_o and_o the_o primative_a church_n govern_v by_o the_o apostle_n according_a to_o the_o gospel_n have_v leave_v we_o no_o ordinance_n or_o commandment_n but_o that_o pope_n pelagius_n five_o hundred_o fifty_o eight_o year_n after_o christ_n do_v ordain_v as_o we_o may_v read_v that_o the_o dead_a shall_v be_v remember_v in_o the_o mass_n it_o follow_v that_o since_o there_o be_v no_o express_a proof_n thereof_o in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o necessity_n to_o believe_v the_o say_a purgatory_n as_o a_o article_n of_o our_o faith_n or_o that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o place_n after_o this_o life_n but_o here_o be_v matter_n of_o doubt_n because_o man_n in_o these_o day_n be_v strange_o affect_v to_o the_o help_n and_o aid_v of_o the_o dead_a notwithstanding_o that_o in_o all_o the_o scripture_n there_o be_v nothing_o express_o teach_v except_o in_o the_o book_n of_o macchabee_n which_o be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n nor_o canonical_a and_o that_o neither_o christ_n nor_o the_o prophet_n nor_o the_o apostle_n nor_o the_o saint_n near_o their_o time_n have_v ever_o teach_v to_o pray_v for_o the_o dead_a but_o have_v rather_o careful_o teach_v that_o the_o people_n that_o live_v unblamable_o shall_v be_v saint_n and_o therefore_o answer_v to_o the_o doubt_n abovementioned_n we_o say_v that_o the_o principal_a cause_n of_o this_o dote_a affection_n proceed_v from_o the_o deceit_n and_o trumpery_n and_o avarice_n of_o the_o priest_n who_o have_v not_o teach_v the_o people_n as_o the_o prophet_n of_o christ_n nor_o as_o his_o apostle_n to_o live_v well_o but_o to_o offer_v much_o and_o to_o place_v their_o hope_n of_o deliverance_n and_o happiness_n in_o purgatory_n chap._n iii_o of_o the_o invocation_n of_o saint_n we_o be_v now_o to_o speak_v of_o prayer_n unto_o saint_n which_o certain_a great_a master_n with_o their_o follower_n preach_v unto_o the_o people_n extol_v and_o publish_v it_o with_o great_a diligence_n as_o a_o article_n of_o their_o faith_n affirm_v that_o the_o saint_n that_o be_v in_o their_o celestial_a country_n be_v to_o be_v pray_v unto_o by_o we_o in_o the_o self_n same_o manner_n as_o the_o priest_n be_v accustom_v to_o do_v and_o other_o of_o the_o people_n by_o their_o instruction_n enjoin_v they_o many_o other_o thing_n as_o help_n to_o their_o invocation_n by_o which_o invocation_n authorization_n and_o magnification_n the_o people_n carnal_o &_o erroneous_o believe_v it_o imagine_v that_o as_o it_o be_v the_o manner_n and_o practice_n before_o earthly_a king_n when_o they_o be_v angry_a that_o such_o as_o be_v not_o in_o choler_n shall_v intercede_v for_o they_o and_o pacify_v their_o anger_n so_o the_o people_n think_v it_o be_v so_o with_o god_n that_o be_v that_o the_o saint_n do_v appease_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n when_o he_o be_v angry_a with_o sinner_n but_o we_o be_v not_o to_o believe_v any_o such_o thing_n for_o if_o it_o be_v so_o there_o can_v be_v no_o true_a conformity_n between_o the_o will_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o the_o will_n of_o god_n for_o it_o shall_v seem_v that_o the_o saint_n be_v not_o angry_a with_o those_o against_o who_o god_n be_v move_v to_o anger_n second_o by_o this_o magnification_n and_o invocation_n of_o saint_n the_o people_n fall_v into_o idolatry_n put_v their_o trust_n more_o in_o saint_n then_o in_o god_n and_o serve_v they_o with_o great_a affection_n than_o the_o only_a god_n which_o they_o show_v by_o the_o effect_n by_o the_o ornament_n of_o their_o altar_n which_o be_v most_o precious_a by_o their_o excellent_a music_n the_o multiplication_n of_o their_o taper_n and_o by_o other_o solemnity_n by_o which_o mean_v the_o simple_a people_n be_v induce_v to_o think_v that_o the_o saint_n be_v more_o merciful_a than_o god_n because_o they_o free_v he_o from_o damnation_n by_o those_o prayer_n they_o make_v unto_o god_n who_o god_n have_v condemn_v beside_o this_o to_o maintain_v these_o thing_n the_o simple_a people_n be_v teach_v that_o the_o saint_n desire_v that_o man_n shall_v offer_v oblation_n unto_o they_o and_o take_v pleasure_n in_o their_o praise_n and_o that_o they_o mediate_v principal_o for_o those_o that_o offer_v incense_n unto_o they_o and_o other_o honour_n all_o which_o thing_n we_o be_v to_o abhor_v and_o careful_o to_o fly_v of_o this_o invocation_n therefore_o we_o be_v now_o to_o speak_v and_o to_o make_v know_v what_o our_o opinion_n be_v touch_v this_o prayer_n unto_o saint_n and_o first_o let_v we_o see_v what_o invocation_n be_v invocation_n be_v a_o desire_n of_o the_o whole_a understanding_n and_o soul_n send_v unto_o god_n by_o the_o voice_n and_o by_o prayer_n second_o we_o know_v and_o believe_v that_o the_o man_n christ_n jesus_n be_v mediator_n between_o god_n and_o man_n and_o advocate_n to_o god_n the_o father_n who_o have_v pay_v for_o our_o sin_n that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o see_v he_o ever_o live_v to_o make_v intercession_n for_o they_o heb._n 7.25_o no_o man_n come_v to_o the_o father_n but_o by_o he_o and_o whatsoever_o you_o shall_v ask_v in_o my_o name_n that_o will_v i_o do_v say_v he_o john_n 14.13_o
