be_v extraordinary_a person_n immediate_o appoint_v by_o god_n and_o govern_v by_o his_o immediate_a direction_n the_o apostle_n st._n jude_n allege_n this_o example_n against_o those_o in_o his_o day_n who_o be_v turbulent_a and_o factious_a who_o despise_a dominion_n and_o speak_v evil_a of_o dignity_n that_o they_o shall_v perish_v in_o the_o gainsay_n of_o core_n jud._n v._n 11._o which_o he_o can_v not_o have_v do_v have_v not_o this_o example_n extend_v to_o all_o ordinary_a as_o well_o as_o extraordinary_a case_n have_v it_o not_o be_v a_o last_a testimony_n of_o god_n displeasure_n against_o all_o those_o who_o oppose_v themselves_o against_o the_o sovereign_a power_n but_o moses_n be_v not_o always_o to_o rule_v over_o they_o and_o therefore_o god_n express_o provide_v for_o a_o succession_n of_o sovereign_a power_n to_o which_o they_o must_v all_o submit_v the_o ordinary_a sovereign_a power_n of_o the_o jewish_a nation_n after_o moses_n his_o death_n be_v devolve_v either_o on_o the_o high_a priest_n or_o those_o extraordinary_a person_n who_o god_n be_v please_v to_o raise_v up_o such_o as_o joshua_n and_o the_o several_a judge_n till_o in_o samuel_n day_n it_o settle_v in_o their_o king_n for_o as_o for_o the_o jewish_a sanhedrim_n who_o power_n be_v so_o much_o extol_v by_o the_o jewish_a writer_n who_o be_v all_o of_o a_o late_a date_n many_o year_n since_o the_o destruction_n of_o jerusalem_n and_o therefore_o no_o competent_a witness_n of_o what_o be_v do_v so_o many_o age_n before_o it_o do_v not_o appear_v from_o any_o testimony_n of_o scripture_n that_o there_o be_v any_o such_o court_n of_o judicature_n till_o after_o their_o return_n from_o the_o babylonish_n captivity_n but_o yet_o god_n take_v care_n to_o secure_v the_o peace_n and_o good_a government_n of_o the_o nation_n by_o appoint_v such_o a_o power_n as_o shall_v receive_v the_o last_o appeal_n and_o who_o sentence_n in_o all_o controversy_n shall_v be_v final_a and_o uncontrollable_a as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o the_o 17_o deut._n 8_o 9_o 10_o 11_o 12_o v._n there_o be_v inferior_a magistrate_n and_o judge_n appoint_v in_o their_o several_a tribe_n and_o city_n which_o moses_n do_v by_o the_o advice_n of_o jethro_n his_o father-in-law_n and_o by_o the_o approbation_n of_o god_n exod._n 18._o but_o as_o the_o supreme_a power_n be_v still_o reserve_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o moses_n while_o he_o live_v so_o it_o be_v here_o secure_v to_o the_o high_a priest_n or_o judge_n after_o his_o death_n for_o it_o be_v express_o appoint_v that_o if_o those_o inferior_a judge_n can_v not_o determine_v the_o controversy_n they_o shall_v come_v unto_o the_o priest_n the_o levite_n that_o be_v the_o priest_n of_o the_o tribe_n of_o levi_n who_o by_o the_o 12_o ver_fw-la appear_v only_o to_o be_v the_o high_a priest_n and_o to_o the_o judge_n that_o shall_v be_v in_o those_o day_n that_o be_v if_o it_o shall_v be_v at_o such_o a_o time_n when_o there_o be_v a_o extraordinary_a judge_n raise_v by_o god_n for_o there_o be_v not_o always_o such_o judge_n in_o israel_n as_o be_v evident_a to_o any_o one_o who_o read_v the_o book_n of_o judge_n and_o of_o they_o they_o shall_v inquire_v and_o they_o shall_v show_v the_o sentence_n of_o judgement_n and_o thou_o shall_v do_v according_a to_o the_o sentence_n which_o they_o of_o that_o place_n which_o the_o lord_n shall_v choose_v shall_v show_v thou_o and_o thou_o shall_v observe_v to_o do_v according_a to_o all_o they_o shall_v inform_v thou_o where_o the_o place_n which_o god_n shall_v choose_v signify_v the_o place_n which_o he_o shall_v appoint_v for_o the_o ark_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o for_o the_o levitical_a worship_n which_o be_v the_o place_n where_o the_o high_a priest_n and_o the_o chief_a judge_n or_o ruler_n of_o israel_n when_o there_o be_v any_o such_o person_n have_v their_o ordinary_a residence_n which_o be_v at_o first_o at_o shilo_n and_o afterward_o at_o jerusalem_n and_o what_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o chief_a priest_n or_o of_o the_o judge_n when_o there_o be_v one_o be_v in_o those_o day_n appear_v from_o v_o 12._o and_o the_o man_n that_o will_v do_v presumptuous_o and_o will_v not_o hearken_v to_o the_o priest_n that_o stand_v to_o minister_v there_o before_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n or_o unto_o the_o judge_n even_o that_o man_n shall_v die_v and_o thou_o shall_v put_v away_o the_o evil_a from_o israel_n this_o be_v as_o absolute_a authority_n as_o the_o most_o absolute_a monarch_n in_o the_o world_n can_v challenge_v that_o disobedience_n to_o their_o last_o and_o final_a determination_n what_o ever_o the_o cause_n be_v shall_v be_v punish_v with_o death_n and_o what_o place_n can_v there_o be_v for_o resistance_n in_o such_o a_o constitution_n of_o government_n as_o this_o it_o be_v say_v indeed_o in_o v_o 11._o according_a to_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n which_o they_o shall_v teach_v thou_o and_o according_a to_o the_o judgement_n that_o they_o shall_v tell_v thou_o thou_o shall_v do_v and_o hence_o some_o conclude_v that_o they_o be_v not_o bind_v to_o abide_v by_o their_o sentence_n nor_o be_v punishable_a if_o they_o do_v not_o but_o only_o in_o such_o case_n when_o they_o give_v sentence_n according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n but_o these_o man_n do_v not_o consider_v that_o the_o matter_n in_o controversy_n be_v suppose_v to_o be_v doubtful_a and_o such_o as_o can_v not_o be_v determine_v by_o the_o inferior_a court_n and_o therefore_o be_v submit_v to_o the_o decision_n of_o the_o supreme_a judge_n and_o as_o he_o determine_v so_o they_o must_v do_v and_o no_o man_n under_o the_o penalty_n of_o death_n must_v presume_v to_o do_v otherwise_o which_o take_v away_o all_o liberty_n of_o judge_v from_o private_a person_n though_o this_o supreme_a judge_n may_v possible_o mistake_v in_o his_o judgement_n as_o all_o humane_a judicature_n be_v liable_a to_o mistake_n but_o it_o seem_v god_n almighty_n think_v it_o necessary_a that_o there_o shall_v be_v some_o final_a judgement_n from_o whence_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o appeal_n notwithstanding_o the_o possibility_n of_o a_o mistake_n in_o it_o so_o that_o there_o be_v a_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a that_o be_v unaccountable_a and_o irresistible_a power_n in_o the_o jewish_a nation_n appoint_v by_o god_n himself_o for_o indeed_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o the_o public_a peace_n and_o security_n of_o any_o nation_n shall_v be_v preserve_v without_o it_o and_o i_o think_v it_o be_v as_o plain_a that_o when_o the_o jew_n will_v have_v a_o king_n their_o king_n be_v invest_v with_o this_o supreme_a and_o irresistible_a power_n for_o when_o they_o desire_v a_o king_n they_o do_v not_o desire_v a_o mere_a nominal_a and_o titular_a king_n but_o a_o king_n to_o judge_v they_o and_o to_o go_v out_o before_o they_o and_o fight_v their_o battle_n that_o be_v a_o king_n who_o have_v the_o supreme_a and_o sovereign_a authority_n 1_o sam._n 8._o 6._o 19_o 20._o a_o king_n who_o shall_v have_v all_o that_o power_n of_o government_n except_v the_o peculiar_a act_n of_o the_o priestly_a office_n which_o either_o their_o highpriest_n or_o their_o judge_n have_v before_o and_o therefore_o when_o samuel_n tell_v they_o what_o shall_v be_v the_o manner_n of_o their_o king_n 11_o ver_fw-la though_o what_o he_o say_v do_v necessary_o suppose_v the_o translation_n of_o the_o sovereign_n and_o irresistible_a power_n to_o the_o person_n of_o their_o king_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o suppose_v that_o the_o king_n have_v any_o new_a power_n give_v he_o more_o than_o what_o be_v exercise_v former_o by_o their_o priest_n and_o judge_n he_o do_v not_o deter_v they_o from_o choose_v a_o king_n because_o a_o king_n shall_v have_v great_a power_n and_o be_v more_o uncontrollable_a and_o irresistible_a than_o their_o other_o ruler_n be_v for_o samuel_n himself_o have_v have_v as_o sovereign_a and_o irresistible_a a_o power_n as_o any_o king_n be_v the_o supreme_a judge_n in_o israel_n who_o sentence_n no_o man_n can_v disobey_v or_o contradict_v but_o he_o incur_v the_o penalty_n of_o death_n according_a to_o the_o moysaicall_a law_n but_o the_o reason_n why_o he_o dissuade_v they_o from_o choose_v a_o king_n be_v because_o the_o external_a pomp_n and_o magnificence_n
vindicate_v his_o authority_n by_o a_o miraculous_a destruction_n of_o those_o rebel_n for_o the_o earth_n open_v her_o mouth_n and_o swallow_v they_o up_o afterwards_o when_o they_o come_v into_o canaan_n the_o ordinary_a exercise_n of_o this_o power_n be_v in_o their_o high-priest_n and_o judge_n who_o god_n raise_v up_o who_o sentence_n and_o judgement_n be_v final_a and_o must_v not_o be_v resist_v under_o penalty_n of_o death_n when_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n desire_v a_o king_n this_o sovereign_a and_o irresistible_a power_n be_v transfer_v to_o he_o and_o settle_v in_o his_o person_n saul_n be_v the_o first_o king_n who_o be_v choose_v by_o god_n and_o anoint_v by_o samuel_n but_o for_o his_o disobedience_n be_v afterward_o reject_v by_o god_n and_o david_n the_o son_n of_o jesse_n be_v anoint_v king_n to_o succeed_v after_o saul_n death_n but_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n david_n be_v persecute_v by_o saul_n who_o seek_v after_o his_o life_n and_o though_o he_o himself_o be_v anoint_v by_o god_n and_o saul_n be_v reject_v by_o he_o yet_o he_o dare_v not_o resist_v nor_o oppose_v he_o nor_o defend_v himself_o by_o force_n against_o the_o most_o unjust_a violence_n but_o flee_v for_o his_o life_n and_o hide_v himself_o in_o cave_n and_o mountain_n nay_o when_o saul_n be_v deliver_v into_o his_o hand_n by_o god_n he_o dare_v not_o stretch_v out_o his_o hand_n against_o the_o lord_n be_v anoint_v but_o to_o proceed_v in_o the_o story_n solomon_n david_n son_n who_o succeed_v he_o in_o his_o kingdom_n do_v all_o those_o thing_n which_o god_n have_v express_o forbid_v the_o king_n to_o do_v he_o send_v into_o egypt_n for_o horse_n 1_o king_n 10._o 28._o he_o multiply_v wife_n and_o love_v many_o strange_a woman_n together_o with_o the_o the_o command_n of_o god_n for_o this_o god_n who_o be_v the_o only_a judge_n of_o sovereign_a prince_n be_v very_o angry_a with_o he_o and_o threaten_v to_o rend_v the_o kingdom_n from_o he_o which_o be_v afterward_o accomplish_v in_o the_o day_n of_o rehoboam_n but_o yet_o this_o do_v not_o give_v authority_n to_o his_o subject_n to_o rebel_v if_o to_o be_v under_o the_o direction_n and_o obligation_n of_o law_n make_v a_o limit_a monarchy_n it_o be_v certain_a the_o kingdom_n of_o israel_n be_v so_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n which_o the_o king_n be_v express_o forbid_v to_o do_v as_o you_o have_v already_o hear_v and_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v to_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o his_o government_n the_o stand_a law_n of_o his_o kingdom_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v command_v when_o he_o come_v to_o the_o throne_n to_o write_v a_o copy_n of_o the_o law_n with_o his_o own_o hand_n and_o to_o read_v in_o it_o all_o his_o day_n that_o he_o may_v learn_v to_o fear_v the_o lord_n his_o god_n and_o to_o keep_v all_o the_o word_n of_o this_o law_n and_o these_o statute_n to_o do_v they_o 17_o deut._n 18_o 19_o 20._o and_o yet_o he_o be_v a_o sovereign_a prince_n if_o he_o break_v these_o law_n god_n be_v his_o judge_n and_o avenger_n but_o he_o be_v accountable_a to_o no_o earthly_a tribunal_n baasha_n kill_v nadab_n the_o son_n of_o jeroboam_fw-la and_o reign_v in_o his_o stead_n 1_o king_n 15._o 25_o 26_o 27._o and_o for_o this_o and_o his_o other_o sin_n god_n threaten_v evil_a against_o baasha_n and_o against_o his_o house_n 16_o chron._n 7._o zimri_n slay_v elah_n the_o son_n of_o baasha_n and_o slay_v all_o the_o house_n of_o baasha_n but_o he_o do_v not_o long_o enjoy_v the_o kingdom_n which_o he_o have_v usurp_v by_o treason_n and_o murder_n for_o he_o reign_v but_o seven_o day_n in_o tirzah_n which_o be_v besiege_v and_o take_v by_o omri_n he_o go_v into_o the_o palace_n of_o the_o king_n house_n and_o burn_v the_o king_n house_n over_o he_o with_o fire_n and_o die_v v_o 18._o this_o example_n jezebel_n threaten_v jehu_n with_o have_v zimri_n peace_n who_o slay_v his_o master_n 2_o king_n 9_o 31._o and_o yet_o nadab_n and_o elah_n be_v both_o of_o they_o very_o wicked_a prince_n and_o if_o that_o will_v justify_v treason_n and_o murder_n both_o baasha_n and_o zimri_n have_v be_v very_o innocent_a this_o be_v a_o sufficient_a evidence_n how_o sacred_a and_o inviolable_a the_o person_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o jewish_a king_n be_v during_o the_o time_n of_o that_o monarchy_n but_o it_o will_v not_o be_v amiss_o brief_o to_o consider_v what_o obligation_n the_o jew_n be_v under_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o high_a power_n when_o they_o be_v carry_v captive_a into_o babylon_n now_o the_o prophet_n jeremiah_n have_v give_v a_o express_a command_n to_o they_o seek_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o city_n whither_o i_o have_v cause_v you_o to_o be_v carry_v away_o captive_n and_o pray_v to_o the_o lord_n for_o it_o for_o in_o the_o peace_n thereof_o you_o shall_v have_v peace_n 29_o jer._n 7._o which_o make_v it_o a_o necessary_a duty_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o those_o power_n under_o who_o government_n they_o live_v and_o according_o we_o find_v that_o mordecai_n discover_v the_o treason_n of_o bigthana_n and_o teresh_a two_o of_o the_o king_n chamberlain_n the_o keeper_n of_o the_o door_n who_o seek_v to_o lay_v hand_n on_o the_o king_n ahasuerus_n 6_o esther_n 2._o and_o how_o numerous_a and_o powerful_a the_o jew_n be_v at_o this_o time_n and_o what_o great_a disturbance_n they_o can_v have_v give_v to_o the_o empire_n appear_v evident_o from_o the_o book_n of_o esther_n king_n ahasuerus_n upon_o the_o suggestion_n of_o haman_n have_v grant_v a_o decree_n for_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o whole_a people_n of_o the_o jew_n which_o be_v send_v into_o all_o the_o province_n write_v and_o seal_v with_o the_o king_n ring_n this_o decree_n can_v never_o be_v reverse_v again_o for_o that_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o mede_n and_o persian_n and_o therefore_o when_o esther_n have_v find_v favour_n with_o the_o king_n all_o that_o can_v be_v do_v for_o the_o jew_n be_v to_o grant_v another_o decree_n for_o they_o to_o defend_v themselves_o which_o according_o be_v do_v and_o the_o effect_n of_o it_o be_v this_o that_o the_o jew_n at_o shusan_n slay_v three_o hundred_o man_n and_o the_o jew_n of_o the_o other_o province_n slay_v seventy_o and_o five_o thousand_o and_o rest_v from_o their_o enemy_n 9_o esther_n 15_o 16_o 17._o without_o this_o decree_n mordecai_n do_v not_o think_v it_o lawful_a to_o resist_v which_o yet_o be_v a_o case_n of_o as_o great_a extremity_n and_o barbarous_a cruelty_n as_o can_v ever_o happen_v which_o make_v he_o put_v esther_n upon_o so_o hazardous_a a_o attempt_n as_o to_o venture_v into_o the_o king_n presence_n without_o be_v call_v which_o be_v death_n by_o their_o law_n unless_o the_o king_n shall_v gracious_o hold_v out_o the_o golden_a sceptre_n to_o they_o 4_o esth._n 11._o and_o yet_o when_o they_o have_v obtain_v this_o decree_n they_o be_v able_a to_o defend_v themselves_o and_o to_o destroy_v their_o enemy_n which_o be_v as_o famous_a a_o example_n of_o passive_a obedience_n as_o can_v be_v meet_v with_o in_o any_o history_n and_o therefore_o the_o prophet_n daniel_n acknowledge_v to_o belteshazzar_n the_o most_o high_a god_n give_v nabuchadnezzar_n thy_o father_n a_o kingdom_n and_o majesty_n and_o glory_n and_o honour_n and_o for_o the_o majesty_n that_o he_o give_v he_o all_o people_n nation_n and_o language_n tremble_v and_o fear_v before_o he_o who_o he_o will_v he_o slay_v and_o who_o he_o will_v he_o keep_v alive_a and_o who_o he_o will_v be_v set_v up_o and_o who_o he_o will_v he_o pull_v down_o 5_o dan._n 18_o 19_o and_o if_o these_o heathen_a king_n receive_v their_o power_n from_o god_n as_o the_o prophet_n here_o affirm_v st._n paul_n have_v make_v the_o application_n of_o it_o that_o he_o that_o resist_v resist_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n this_o may_v serve_v for_o the_o time_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o i_o shall_v conclude_v these_o testimony_n with_o the_o say_n of_o the_o wise_a man_n who_o be_v both_o a_o prophet_n and_o a_o king_n i_o counsel_v thou_o to_o keep_v the_o king_n commandment_n and_o that_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o oath_n of_o god_n be_v not_o hasty_a to_o go_v out_o of_o his_o sight_n stand_v not_o in_o a_o evil_a thing_n for_o he_o do_v whatsoever_o please_v he_o where_o the_o word_n of_o a_o king_n be_v there_o be_v power_n and_o who_o may_v say_v unto_o he_o what_o do_v thou_o 8_o eccl._n 2_o 3_o 4._o chap._n ii_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n concern_v nonresistance_n let_v we_o now_o consider_v what_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n teach_v
resist_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n now_o if_o they_o must_v obey_v the_o power_n because_o they_o be_v from_o god_n subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n be_v as_o much_o our_o duty_n when_o we_o have_v power_n to_o resist_v as_o when_o we_o have_v not_o and_o be_v as_o much_o our_o duty_n at_o this_o day_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o apostle_n if_o we_o believe_v that_o god_n have_v as_o great_a a_o hand_n in_o set_v up_o king_n now_o as_o he_o have_v then_o 2._o he_o threaten_v eternal_a damnation_n against_o those_o who_o resist_v he_o that_o resist_v shall_v receive_v unto_o himself_o damnation_n which_o suppose_v that_o there_o be_v a_o moral_a evil_n in_o resistance_n and_o therefore_o that_o nonresistance_n be_v a_o eternal_a and_o unchangeable_a law_n which_o can_v be_v true_a if_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o resist_v when_o we_o can_v resist_v to_o some_o purpose_n when_o we_o can_v resist_v and_o conquer_v it_o be_v foolish_a indeed_o to_o resist_v a_o prince_n when_o we_o have_v not_o sufficient_a force_n to_o oppose_v against_o he_o but_o it_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a case_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v perish_v etenal_o for_o do_v a_o action_n which_o be_v lawful_a in_o itself_o but_o imprudent_o undertake_v these_o man_n have_v need_n look_v well_o to_o themselves_o how_o lawful_a soever_o they_o think_v resistance_n to_o be_v if_o every_o imprudent_a and_o unfortunate_a rebel_n must_v be_v damn_v 3._o st._n paul_n add_v that_o we_o must_v needs_o be_v subject_n not_o only_o for_o wrath_n but_o also_o for_o conscience_n sake_n that_o be_v not_o only_o out_o of_o fear_n of_o man_n but_o out_o of_o conscience_n of_o our_o duty_n to_o god_n now_o if_o resistance_n be_v not_o in_o its_o nature_n sinful_a it_o be_v a_o very_a prudential_a consideration_n not_o to_o resist_v for_o fear_n of_o wrath_n that_o be_v for_o fear_v of_o be_v punish_v by_o man_n if_o we_o can_v conquer_v but_o there_o will_v be_v no_o conscience_n in_o the_o case_n no_o sense_n of_o any_o duty_n to_o god_n unless_o we_o think_v that_o nonresistance_n be_v our_o duty_n when_o we_o can_v conquer_v and_o resistance_n when_o we_o can_v 4._o st._n peter_n tell_v we_o that_o this_o subjection_n to_o king_n and_o governor_n be_v a_o good_a and_o virtuous_a action_n and_o therefore_o he_o call_v it_o well-doing_n for_o so_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o with_o well-doing_n you_o may_v put_v to_o silence_v the_o ignorance_n of_o foolish_a man_n that_o be_v by_o submit_v to_o king_n and_o governor_n as_o you_o have_v already_o hear_v now_o the_o nature_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n can_v alter_v with_o the_o circumstance_n of_o our_o condition_n that_o which_o be_v good_a in_o one_o age_n be_v so_o in_o another_o which_o show_v that_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n be_v not_o a_o temporary_a law_n and_o mere_a matter_n of_o prudence_n but_o a_o essential_a duty_n of_o christian_a religion_n 5._o for_o it_o appear_v by_o what_o he_o add_v that_o it_o be_v a_o great_a credit_n and_o reputation_n to_o christianity_n that_o it_o make_v man_n quiet_a peaceable_a and_o governable_a by_o well-doing_n they_o put_v to_o silence_v the_o ignorance_n of_o foolish_a man_n by_o their_o peaceable_a and_o obedient_a behaviour_n to_o their_o governor_n they_o shame_v those_o man_n who_o ignorant_o reproach_v the_o christian_a religion_n now_o hence_o there_o be_v two_o plain_a consequent_n 1._o that_o subjection_n to_o government_n be_v a_o thing_n of_o very_o good_a repute_n in_o the_o world_n or_o else_o it_o can_v be_v no_o credit_n to_o christianity_n and_o this_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n that_o subjection_n to_o government_n be_v a_o great_a virtue_n because_o all_o man_n speak_v well_o of_o it_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o good_a report_n and_o therefore_o become_v christian_n 4_o phil._n 8._o 2._o it_o hence_o follow_v also_o that_o subjection_n to_o government_n be_v a_o stand_a doctrine_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n because_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o they_o shall_v recommend_v christianity_n to_o the_o world_n by_o subjection_n to_o prince_n but_o certain_o god_n never_o intend_v they_o shall_v put_v a_o cheat_n upon_o the_o world_n and_o recommend_v christianity_n to_o they_o by_o that_o which_o be_v no_o part_n nor_o duty_n of_o christianity_n this_o be_v abundant_o sufficient_a to_o confute_v that_o vain_a pretence_n that_o the_o doctrine_n of_o subjection_n and_o nonresistance_n oblige_v christian_n only_o while_o they_o be_v unable_a to_o resist_v and_o defend_v themselves_o and_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o satisfy_v we_o what_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n be_v about_o subjection_n to_o prince_n as_o for_o their_o example_n i_o think_v there_o be_v never_o any_o dispute_n about_o that_o it_o be_v sufficient_o know_v that_o they_o suffer_v martyrdom_n as_o a_o vast_a number_n of_o christian_n in_o that_o and_o some_o follow_a age_n do_v without_o either_o reproach_v their_o governor_n or_o rebel_a against_o they_o and_o this_o they_o do_v as_o they_o teach_v other_o to_o do_v not_o mere_o because_o they_o can_v not_o resist_v but_o out_o of_o duty_n and_o reverence_n to_o god_n who_o set_v prince_n on_o throne_n and_o have_v give_v they_o a_o sacred_a and_o inviolable_a authority_n and_o in_o imitation_n of_o their_o great_a lord_n and_o master_n who_o go_v as_o a_o lamb_n to_o the_o slaughter_n and_o as_o a_o sheep_n before_o the_o shearer_n be_v dumb_a so_o he_o open_v not_o his_o mouth_n chap._n vi_o a_o answer_n to_o the_o most_o popular_a objection_n against_o nonresistance_n i_o proceed_v now_o to_o consider_v those_o objection_n which_o be_v make_v against_o the_o doctrine_n of_o nonresistance_n though_o methinks_v after_o such_o plain_a and_o convince_a proof_n that_o nonresistance_n be_v the_o doctrine_n both_o of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n though_o witty_a man_n may_v be_v able_a to_o start_v some_o objection_n yet_o wise_a and_o good_a man_n shall_v not_o regard_v they_o for_o no_o objection_n be_v of_o any_o force_n against_o a_o plain_a and_o express_a law_n of_o god_n indeed_o when_o we_o have_v no_o evidence_n for_o a_o thing_n but_o only_o natural_a reason_n and_o the_o reason_n seem_v to_o be_v equal_o strong_a and_o cogent_a on_o both_o side_n it_o render_v the_o matter_n very_o doubtful_a on_o which_o side_n the_o truth_n lie_v but_o when_o on_o one_o side_n there_o be_v a_o plain_a and_o express_a revelation_n of_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n some_o show_n and_o appearance_n of_o reason_n i_o think_v there_o can_v be_v no_o dispute_n which_o side_n we_o choose_v unless_o any_o man_n think_v it_o doubtful_a which_o be_v the_o most_o certain_a and_o infallible_a rule_n scripture_n or_o mere_a natural_a reason_n and_o therefore_o till_o man_n can_v answer_v that_o scripture-evidence_n which_o i_o have_v produce_v which_o i_o be_o not_o much_o concern_v about_o for_o i_o guess_v it_o will_v take_v they_o up_o some_o time_n to_o do_v it_o all_o their_o other_o objection_n whether_o i_o can_v answer_v they_o or_o not_o signify_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o i_o and_o aught_o to_o signify_v as_o little_a to_o any_o man_n who_o reverence_v the_o scripture_n but_o let_v we_o consider_v their_o objection_n for_o they_o be_v not_o so_o formidable_a that_o we_o need_v be_v afraid_a of_o they_o now_o i_o know_v no_o body_n but_o will_v acknowledge_v that_o in_o most_o case_n it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o subject_n not_o to_o resist_v their_o prince_n but_o they_o only_o pretend_v that_o this_o be_v not_o their_o duty_n when_o their_o prince_n oppress_v and_o persecute_v they_o contrary_a to_o law_n when_o their_o life_n and_o liberty_n and_o property_n and_o religion_n be_v all_o secure_v by_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n they_o see_v no_o reason_n why_o they_o shall_v tame_o suffer_v a_o prince_n to_o usurp_v upon_o they_o why_o they_o shall_v not_o defend_v themselves_o against_o all_o unjust_a and_o illegal_a violence_n and_o they_o urge_v several_a argument_n to_o prove_v that_o they_o may_v do_v so_o which_o may_v be_v reduce_v to_o these_o five_o 1._o that_o they_o be_v bind_v by_o no_o law_n to_o suffer_v against_o law_n 2._o that_o the_o prince_n have_v no_o authority_n against_o law_n 3._o that_o they_o have_v a_o natural_a right_n of_o self-defence_n against_o unjust_a violence_n 4._o that_o otherwise_o we_o destroy_v the_o distinction_n between_o a_o absolute_a and_o limit_a monarch_n between_o a_o prince_n who_o will_n be_v his_o law_n and_o a_o prince_n who_o be_v bind_v to_o govern_v by_o law_n which_o undermine_v the_o fundamental_a constitution_n of_o the_o english_a government_n 5._o that_o if_o resistance_n in_o no_o case_n be_v allow_v the_o mischief_n and_o inconvenience_n to_o mankind_n may_v be_v intolerable_a i_o suppose_v it_o will_v be_v
