and_o m._n tro._n page_n 45._o confess_v that_o though_o the_o precept_n of_o god_n do_v not_o show_v what_o god_n have_v do_v for_o we_o yet_o they_o determine_v man_n duty_n and_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o obedience_n what_o god_n approve_v as_o good_a in_o itself_o and_o what_o be_v our_o duty_n to_o do_v there_o be_v a_o sweet_a harmony_n and_o connexion_n between_o the_o end_n and_o the_o mean_n which_o be_v full_o as_o much_o as_o i_o hold_v in_o this_o point_n viz._n that_o they_o who_o will_v be_v save_v which_o be_v the_o end_n minister_n they_o must_v believe_v and_o obey_v as_o god_n have_v enable_v they_o which_o be_v the_o mean_n or_o at_o least_o one_o mean_n but_o say_v m._n tro._n it_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o love_n of_o god_n that_o he_o shall_v give_v his_o son_n to_o die_v for_o all_o and_o not_o give_v they_o faith_n and_o repentance_n etc._n etc._n ans_fw-fr 1._o to_o which_o i_o answer_v as_o before_o that_o indeed_o if_o god_n have_v give_v his_o son_n to_o die_v for_o all_o with_o a_o intent_n to_o save_v all_o that_o be_v give_v eternal_a life_n to_o all_o or_o any_o without_o faith_n and_o obedience_n then_o if_o any_o have_v come_v short_a of_o it_o it_o may_v have_v seem_v to_o reflect_v on_o the_o wisdom_n justice_n and_o mercy_n of_o jehovah_n but_o the_o scripture_n never_o reveal_v any_o such_o purpose_n in_o god_n as_o you_o may_v see_v by_o joh._n 3._o 16._o h●b_n 5._o 9_o with_o many_o other_o place_n ans_fw-fr 2._o second_o so_o far_o as_o god_n do_v intend_v by_o his_o son_n death_n to_o save_v or_o deliver_v man_n he_o do_v do_v and_o will_v full_o effect_v ●t_a and_o whether_o man_n believe_v it_o or_o no_o they_o shall_v one_o day_n be_v save_v from_o the_o grave_n by_o he_o that_o die_v and_o rise_v again_o ans_fw-fr 3._o three_o that_o god_n so_o put_v man_n in_o a_o sau●●ble_a condition_n that_o if_o any_o come_v short_a of_o eternal_a life_n their_o destruction_n be_v of_o themselves_o to_o believe_v and_o repent_v or_o depart_v from_o evil_a when_o he_o give_v the_o gospel_n which_o be_v the_o word_n of_o faith_n and_o frequent_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v call_v faith_n thus_o faith_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o so_o when_o by_o the_o gospel_n or_o goodness_n of_o god_n any_o soul_n be_v lead_v to_o repentance_n god_n be_v say_v to_o give_v repentance_n yet_o the_o act_n or_o duty_n of_o believe_v and_o repent_v be_v never_o call_v god_n gift_n work_n or_o act_n for_o than_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v damn_v for_o unbelief_n and_o impenitency_n shall_v perish_v because_o god_n give_v they_o not_o the_o mean_n yea_o because_o god_n do_v not_o perform_v his_o act_n or_o work_v in_o the_o creature_n contrary_a to_o all_o the_o reveal_v will_n of_o god_n so_o that_o it_o appear_v to_o i_o and_o thousand_o beside_o that_o m._n tro._n doctrine_n do_v high_o scandalize_v and_o impeach_v and_o restrain_v the_o power_n wisdom_n justice_n and_o love_n of_o god_n for_o if_o christ_n do_v not_o die_v for_o all_o or_o redeem_v all_o from_o the_o power_n of_o the_o grave_n at_o least_o which_o be_v that_o i_o hold_v and_o which_o m._n tro._n cry_v down_o under_o the_o name_n of_o universal_a redemption_n it_o be_v either_o because_o he_o can_v not_o or_o because_o he_o will_v not_o i_o be_o certain_a it_o be_v not_o the_o late_a for_o he_o will_v raise_v up_o all_o man_n at_o the_o last_o day_n 1_o cor._n 15._o 20_o 21_o if_o m._n tro._n say_v it_o be_v because_o he_o can_v not_o wise_a man_n will_v a●hor_v such_o save_n both_o therefore_o be_v true_a he_o which_o be_v infinite_a mr._n troughtons_n doctrine_n detract_v from_o it_o for_o he_o confess_v that_o the_o tender_v of_o mercy_n by_o the_o lord_n command_n be_v and_o must_v be_v to_o all_o where_o the_o gospel_n come_v though_o not_o real_o and_o in_o good_a earnest_n as_o one_o say_v yet_o christ_n die_v not_o for_o all_o say_v mr._n troughton_n symson_n now_o i_o beseech_v thou_o o_o impartial_a soul_n that_o read_v this_o judge_v what_o be_v right_a and_o see_v whether_o it_o suit_v with_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n to_o invite_v persuade_v beseech_v and_o stretch_v out_o his_o when_o christ_n ask_v the_o blind_a man_n whether_o he_o do_v believe_v on_o the_o son_n of_o god_n he_o answer_v and_o ●aid_v who_o be_v he_o that_o i_o may_v believe_v on_o he_o jo._n 9_o 35._o 36._o he_o must_v know_v he_o before_o he_o can_v believe_v on_o he_o object_n but_o say_v mr._n troughton_n it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n purpose_n who_o christ_n die_v for_o in_o particular_a and_o therefore_o thou_o can_v not_o fetch_v the_o ground_n of_o thy_o faith_n from_o thence_o but_o look_v to_o the_o generality_n of_o the_o offer_n of_o grace_n and_o command_v to_o believe_v ans_fw-fr 1._o i_o grant_v it_o and_o its_o that_o which_o i_o ever_o say_v that_o no_o man_n have_v a_o ground_n to_o believe_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o he_o if_o he_o die_v for_o some_o particular_a person_n only_o ans_fw-fr 2._o it_o seem_v then_o there_o be_v a_o general_a offer_n of_o grace_n and_o a_o precept_n of_o god_n command_v and_o encourage_v to_o believe_v i_o entreat_v the_o discreet_a reader_n to_o consider_v what_o clear_a truth_n mr._n tronghton_n profess_v and_o how_o he_o have_v with_o one_o hand_n ruin_v that_o great_a building_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o restrain_a redemption_n which_o he_o and_o many_o more_o with_o all_o their_o hand_n head_n and_o heart_n have_v labour_v almost_o these_o two_o hundred_o year_n to_o raise_v up_o for_o see_v there_o be_v a_o general_n tender_a of_o grace_n and_o manifestation_n of_o goodness_n from_o the_o most_o high_a god_n that_o offer_n be_v real_a or_o not_o mr._n troughton_n i_o think_v dare_v not_o say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o real_a though_o i_o fear_n dare_v say_v any_o thing_n or_o else_o will_v never_o have_v restrain_v and_o limit_a scripture_n redemption_n for_o then_o he_o make_v god_n like_o the_o worst_a of_o man_n if_o it_o be_v real_a than_o i_o have_v ail_v that_o grant_v which_o largue_v for_o as_o full_o as_o my_o soul_n can_v desire_v for_o if_o there_o be_v a_o general_a and_o real_a offer_n of_o grace_n from_o god_n as_o most_o certain_o there_o be_v sure_o than_o christ_n die_v for_o all_o or_o else_o god_n offer_v grace_n to_o they_o and_o command_v and_o encourage_v they_o to_o believe_v for_o who_o his_o son_n never_o die_v and_o consequent_o to_o who_o that_o grace_n can_v never_o have_v do_v any_o good_a object_n but_o god_n fore-knew_a they_o will_v not_o receive_v it_o ans_fw-fr but_o he_o fore-knew_a as_o well_o that_o by_o those_o ability_n by_o he_o give_v they_o they_o can_v and_o may_v have_v receive_v it_o and_o therefore_o he_o offer_v it_o that_o they_o may_v be_v leave_v without_o excuse_n which_o can_v not_o have_v be_v if_o the_o tender_a have_v never_o be_v make_v and_o that_o in_o good_a earnest_n too_o though_o mr._n sympson_n in_o half_n say_v the_o contrary_a and_o wherein_o be_v the_o first_o act_n of_o grace_n manifest_v but_o in_o god_n give_v of_o christ_n to_o be_v a_o propitiation_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n that_o than_o which_o be_v the_o first_o and_o principal_a manifestation_n of_o grace_n or_o love_n which_o be_v all_o one_o be_v god_n give_v his_o son_n to_o die_v for_o sinner_n and_o doubtless_o be_v first_o and_o principal_o to_o be_v make_v know_v to_o the_o world_n that_o they_o may_v know_v and_o believe_v the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o so_o come_v to_o turn_v from_o idol_n to_o serve_v he_o that_o so_o love_v they_o or_o else_o we_o shall_v make_v a_o preposterous_a preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n what_o mr._n troughton_n say_v that_o we_o be_v not_o to_o look_v at_o christ_n die_v for_o we_o but_o to_o the_o precept_n of_o god_n for_o our_o encouragement_n to_o believe_v be_v utter_o false_a and_o mere_o legal_a for_o all_o obedience_n that_o be_v not_o ground_v upon_o love_n to_o he_o who_o we_o obey_v be_v little_a worth_n but_o self_n contradiction_n break_v no_o square_a in_o mr._n troughtons_n doctrine_n as_o you_o shall_v see_v in_o the_o next_o place_n where_o he_o say_v the_o command_n to_o believe_v and_o come_v to_o christ_n be_v open_a and_o reveal_v but_o who_o christ_n die_v for_o trough_n be_v secret_a and_o hide_v neither_o than_o this_o as_o i_o have_v clear_o prove_v but_o if_o it_o be_v a_o secret_a how_o come_v mr._n troughton_n to_o know_v any_o thing_n of_o it_o in_o reference_n to_o himself_o or_o other_o ans_fw-fr 2._o if_o a_o man_n have_v a_o conceit_n at_o large_a that_o christ_n die_v for_o he_o or_o a_o certain_a knowledge_n that_o he_o die_v for_o all_o yet_o if_o a_o man_n apply_v it_o not_o to_o his_o own_o soul_n in_o particular_a his_o faith_n will_v be_v but_o ill_o found_v for_o if_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o every_o truth_n be_v the_o sure_a ground_n of_o every_o act_n of_o save_a faith_n how_o can_v i_o believe_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o i_o in_o particular_a except_o i_o f●rst_v know_v that_o he_o die_v for_o i_o in_o particular_a and_o how_o any_o man_n can_v know_v that_o but_o by_o confess_v that_o he_o die_v for_o all_o let_v any_o soul_n judge_n but_o many_o that_o will_v be_v think_v christian_n be_v grow_v just_a like_o the_o jew_n yea_o the_o pharisee_n that_o have_v high_a thought_n of_o themselves_o and_o despise_v other_o and_o that_o christ_n never_o buy_v wicked_a man_n and_o heretic_n but_o only_o seem_v so_o to_o do_v if_o i_o can_v see_v the_o man_n that_o have_v not_o be_v a_o wicked_a man_n or_o a_o heretic_n i_o shall_v it_o may_v be_v say_v so_o too_o but_o there_o be_v not_o that_o man_n on_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n that_o have_v not_o be_v one_o or_o both_o of_o these_o as_o every_o humble_a heart_n will_v ingenuous_o confess_v and_o that_o it_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n that_o draw_v they_o out_o of_o the_o sink_n of_o sin_n superstition_n and_o error_n lead_v they_o to_o repentance_n and_o obedience_n and_o so_o to_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o lord_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o word_n and_o their_o own_o experience_n can_v and_o will_v testify_v with_o many_o thousand_o obj._n but_o say_v mr._n troughton_n there_o be_v many_o thousand_o of_o precious_a saint_n some_o yet_o alive_a and_o other_o at_o rest_n with_o the_o lord_n who_o have_v true_a faith_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o yet_o be_v stranger_n to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n die_v for_o all_o man_n i_o answer_v first_o so_o there_o be_v that_o never_o know_v that_o christ_n suffer_v at_o jerusalem_n yea_o many_o thousand_o that_o never_o hear_v of_o christ_n as_o infant_n and_o other_o who_o die_v before_o they_o have_v do_v or_o know_v good_a or_o evil_a and_o other_o that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o many_o pure_a divine_a truth_n in_o all_o age_n and_o place_n of_o the_o world_n answer_v 2._o suppose_v it_o be_v so_o do_v that_o argue_v that_o when_o we_o may_v have_v more_o and_o clear_a light_n and_o knowledge_n in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o matter_n of_o salvation_n that_o we_o shall_v neglect_v and_o oppose_v it_o though_o they_o who_o be_v invincible_o and_o inevitable_o ignorant_a of_o many_o heavenly_a truth_n may_v be_v happy_a yet_o they_o who_o resist_v they_o can_v be_v so_o answer_v 3._o if_o they_o have_v true_a faith_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o do_v not_o certain_o know_v whether_o christ_n die_v for_o they_o or_o no_o they_o live_v under_o such_o minister_n only_o that_o hold_v that_o christ_n die_v only_o for_o some_o what_o strength_n of_o faith_n peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n may_v they_o have_v who_o know_v and_o can_v prove_v by_o many_o plain_a text_n of_o scriptute_fw-la that_o christ_n die_v for_o they_o how_o may_v such_o soul_n exult_v and_o leap_v for_o joy_n through_o the_o love_n of_o god_n who_o know_v and_o believe_v the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o they_o a_o man_n who_o desire_v such_o a_o one_o
