the_o confident_a advocate_n for_o the_o irish_a papist_n as_o defender_n of_o his_o majesty_n right_n and_o against_o the_o protestant_n of_o ireland_n as_o deserter_n of_o the_o royal_a cause_n when_o the_o popish_a lord_n spiritual_a and_o temporal_a and_o commons_o of_o the_o confederate_a catholic_n speak_v in_o one_o assembly_n what_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o freedom_n of_o the_o catholic_n religion_n have_v be_v practical_o expound_v by_o the_o professor_n of_o it_o in_o ireland_n not_o only_o affirmative_o that_o those_o which_o be_v of_o it_o shall_v enjoy_v the_o public_a and_o undisturbed_a exercise_n thereof_o themselves_o but_o negative_o to_o be_v a_o exclusion_n of_o the_o public_a if_o not_o private_a exercise_n of_o the_o true_a religion_n many_o instance_n i_o can_v present_v the_o reader_n of_o this_o but_o i_o shall_v only_o set_v down_o two_o the_o 1._o be_v dean_n york_n a_o reverend_a minister_n of_o god_n word_n during_o his_o residence_n at_o gallway_n be_v not_o allow_v to_o pay_v the_o last_o duty_n of_o christian_a burial_n to_o those_o protestant_n which_o die_v in_o that_o town_n but_o be_v force_v to_o bury_v they_o nay_o his_o own_o child_n private_o in_o his_o garden_n the_o 2._o be_v that_o my_o l._n duke_n of_o ormond_n though_o own_v by_o the_o irish_a papist_n to_o be_v the_o king_n l._n lieutenant_n and_o consequent_o represent_v his_o sacred_a majesty_n person_n be_v still_o deny_v the_o use_n of_o so_o much_o as_o one_o church_n or_o chappel_n wherever_o the_o say_a papist_n have_v the_o power_n nay_o one_o of_o the_o general_n of_o the_o irish_a papist_n now_o live_v tell_v my_o l._n lieutenant_n at_o kilkenny_n that_o if_o the_o king_n in_o person_n come_v into_o ireland_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v allow_v by_o they_o one_o church_n to_o celebrate_v his_o devotion_n in_o to_o who_o his_o grace_n make_v a_o return_n proportionate_a to_o the_o disloyalty_n of_o that_o declaration_n and_o part_n of_o that_o return_n be_v prophetical_a and_o since_o fulfil_v i_o shall_v here_o insert_v the_o word_n viz._n i_o hope_v to_o live_v to_o so_o all_o of_o that_o mind_n to_o be_v without_o one_o church_n in_o ireland_n to_o say_v mass_n in_o by_o these_o two_o instance_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o direct_a meaning_n of_o those_o word_n the_o freedom_n of_o the_o catholic_n religion_n be_v no_o other_o than_o the_o total_a banish_n out_o of_o this_o kingdom_n the_o exercise_n of_o the_o religion_n establish_v in_o it_o by_o truth_n itself_o and_o by_o the_o good_a and_o wholesome_a law_n of_o the_o land_n 5._o in_o another_o part_n of_o the_o three_o article_n of_o the_o say_a instruction_n these_o very_a word_n be_v insert_v viz._n the_o cofederate_a catholic_n do_v intend_v that_o you_o let_v his_o holiness_n know_v their_o resolution_n to_o insist_v upon_o such_o concession_n and_o agreement_n in_o matter_n of_o religion_n and_o for_o the_o security_n thereof_o as_o his_o holiness_n shall_v approve_v of_o and_o be_v satisfy_v with_o this_o palpable_o evince_v that_o the_o papist_n of_o ireland_n be_v subject_n or_o rebel_n depend_v whole_o upon_o the_o pope_n pleasure_n for_o let_v his_o majesty_n grant_v they_o what_o he_o will_v yet_o his_o pretend_a holiness_n approbation_n must_v be_v the_o rule_n by_o which_o only_o they_o will_v be_v bind_v and_o this_o be_v make_v most_o evident_a by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o nine_o article_n in_o the_o say_a instruction_n which_o follow_v in_o these_o word_n viz._n in_o case_n his_o holiness_n will_v not_o be_v please_v to_o descend_v to_o such_o condition_n as_o may_v be_v grant_v in_o matter_n of_o religion_n than_o you_o be_v to_o solicit_v for_o considerable_a aid_n whereby_o to_o maintain_v a_o war_n and_o to_o ascertain_v and_o secure_v the_o same_o etc._n etc._n and_o soon_o after_o in_o the_o same_o nine_o article_n these_o word_n follow_v viz._n you_o be_v to_o make_v application_n to_o his_o holiness_n for_o his_o be_v protector_n of_o this_o kingdom_n and_o by_o special_a instance_n to_o endeavour_v his_o acceptance_n thereof_o etc._n etc._n still_o the_o pope_n be_v their_o king_n and_o that_o he_o may_v be_v so_o almost_o in_o name_n as_o well_o as_o in_o power_n they_o solicit_v he_o by_o special_a instance_n to_o accept_v
recognition_n and_o that_o their_o rule_v power_n publish_v the_o breach_n thereof_o to_o the_o world_n as_o be_v evident_a by_o their_o declaration_n of_o the_o twelve_o of_o august_n 1650._o so_o by_o many_o other_o insolent_a violation_n though_o his_o majesty_n grace_n and_o mercy_n have_v indulge_v to_o the_o particular_a act_n of_o many_o individual_n yet_o in_o relation_n to_o those_o article_n or_o a_o account_n of_o any_o obligation_n in_o justice_n due_a to_o they_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v regard_v yet_o his_o sacred_a majesty_n justice_n to_o and_o tenderness_n of_o the_o say_v irish_a papist_n have_v abundant_o appear_v not_o only_o in_o his_o have_v in_o person_n still_o hear_v they_o upon_o the_o say_a article_n of_o peace_n but_o also_o in_o give_v they_o near_o 2_o year_n time_n to_o prove_v all_o they_o plead_v and_o so_o long_o leave_v the_o kingdom_n unsettled_a that_o they_o may_v be_v full_o hear_v in_o all_o their_o allegation_n nay_o even_o by_o his_o give_v they_o a_o liberty_n which_o never_o yet_o be_v give_v to_o any_o even_o a_o free_a sight_n of_o the_o bill_n of_o settlement_n which_o be_v humble_o present_v to_o he_o by_o the_o lord_n justice_n and_o council_n pursuant_n to_o poynings_n law_n and_o a_o full_a liberty_n to_o make_v all_o the_o objection_n they_o can_v against_o it_o which_o yet_o they_o have_v be_v so_o far_o from_o acknowledge_v as_o a_o effect_n of_o his_o royal_a care_n and_o indulgence_n that_o in_o all_o their_o answer_n which_o i_o have_v diligent_o peruse_v i_o do_v not_o find_v so_o much_o as_o a_o bare_a take_v notice_n of_o that_o unpresidented_a favour_n but_o possible_o since_o by_o that_o indulgence_n their_o guilt_n have_v be_v but_o the_o more_o evidence_v they_o untrue_o consider_v the_o consequence_n of_o that_o mercy_n to_o be_v what_o only_o be_v intend_v in_o the_o extend_v of_o it_o and_o therefore_o be_v loath_a to_o pay_v his_o majesty_n thank_v for_o what_o have_v but_o more_o discover_v their_o crime_n but_o yet_o this_o be_v but_o proportionate_a to_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o proceed_n for_o since_o they_o call_v his_o sacred_a majesty_n mercy_n a_o injustice_n they_o may_v at_o the_o same_o rate_n decline_v pay_v acknowledgement_n for_o his_o condescension_n to_o they_o have_v thus_o prove_v that_o the_o peace_n be_v break_v by_o the_o irish_a papist_n after_o it_o be_v make_v i_o shall_v now_o say_v something_o to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v design_o break_v before_o it_o be_v make_v if_o by_o a_o previous_a engagement_n and_o oath_n the_o irish_a papist_n confirm_v their_o first_o confederacy_n not_o to_o be_v dissolve_v by_o the_o peace_n which_o then_o they_o seem_o pursue_v if_o they_o combine_v to_o make_v themselves_o judge_n of_o his_o majesty_n action_n and_o to_o appeal_v to_o themselves_o upon_o every_o occurrence_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v inclinable_a to_o misinterpret_v notwithstanding_o their_o protestation_n of_o obedience_n to_o his_o majesty_n authority_n than_o i_o conceive_v the_o whole_a peace_n thereby_o be_v on_o their_o part_n make_v void_a and_o null_a but_o that_o they_o do_v so_o be_v clear_o evident_a and_o that_o conclude_v the_o say_a peace_n that_o in_o case_n of_o non-performing_a of_o the_o article_n thereof_o that_o be_v to_o say_v if_o all_o the_o particular_n therein_o be_v not_o carry_v on_o according_a to_o their_o like_n they_o be_v to_o continue_v the_o association_n and_o union_n of_o confederate_n catholic_n and_o to_o do_v all_z act_n preservative_n thereunto_o in_o this_o place_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o requisite_a to_o let_v the_o reader_n know_v what_o that_o union_n and_o association_n of_o the_o confederate_a catholic_n be_v which_o they_o swear_v to_o continue_v which_o i_o shall_v instane_n in_o somce_n particular_n out_o of_o their_o own_o original_n now_o remain_v on_o record_n in_o the_o first_o roll_n they_o swear_v in_o these_o very_a word_n viz._n i_o a._n b._n do_v promise_n protest_v and_o swear_v before_o god_n and_o his_o saint_n and_o his_o angel_n that_o i_o will_v during_o my_o life_n bear_v true_a faith_n and_o allegiance_n to_o my_o sovereign_a lord_n charles_n by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n king_n of_o great_a britain_n france_n and_o ireland_n and_o to_o his_o heir_n and_o lawful_a successor_n and_o that_o i_o will_v to_o my_o power_n during_o my_o life_n defend_v uphold_v and_o maintain_v all_o his_o and_o their_o just_a prerogative_n estate_n and_o right_n the_o power_n and_o privilege_n of_o parliament_n of_o this_o realm_n the_o fundamental_a law_n of_o ireland_n and_o the_o free_a exercise_n of_o the_o roman_a catholic_n faith_n and_o religion_n throughout_o this_o land_n and_o the_o life_n just_a liberty_n possession_n estate_n and_o right_n of_o all_o those_o that_o have_v take_v or_o shall_v take_v this_o oath_n and_o perform_v the_o content_n thereof_o and_o that_o i_o will_v obey_v and_o ratify_v all_o the_o order_n and_o the_o decree_v make_v and_o to_o be_v make_v by_o the_o supreme_a council_n of_o the_o confederate_a catholic_n of_o this_o kingdom_n concern_v the_o say_v public_a cause_n and_o that_o i_o will_v not_o seek_v or_o receive_v direct_o or_o indirect_o any_o pardon_n or_o protection_n for_o any_o act_n do_v or_o to_o be_v do_v touch_v the_o general_n cause_n without_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o major_a part_n of_o the_o say_a council_n and_o that_o i_o will_v not_o direct_o or_o indirect_o do_v any_o act_n or_o act_n that_o shall_v prejudice_v the_o say_a cause_n but_o will_v to_o the_o hazard_n of_o my_o life_n and_o estate_n assist_v prosecute_v and_o maintain_v the_o same_o moreover_o i_o do_v further_o swear_v that_o i_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o or_o submit_v unto_o any_o peace_n make_v or_o to_o be_v make_v with_o the_o say_v confederate_a catholic_n without_o consent_n and_o approbation_n of_o the_o general_n assembly_n of_o the_o say_v confederate_a catholic_n and_o for_o the_o preservation_n and_o strengthen_n of_o the_o association_n and_o union_n of_o the_o kingdom_n that_o upon_o any_o peace_n or_o accommodation_n to_o be_v make_v or_o conclude_v with_o the_o say_v confederate_a catholic_n as_o aforesaid_a i_o will_v to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o my_o power_n insist_v upon_o and_o maintain_v the_o ensue_a proposition_n until_o a_o the_o supreme_a council_n herein_o they_o show_v what_o the_o pope_n be_v to_o they_o in_o spiritual_n their_o supreme_a council_n be_v in_o temporal_n who_o they_o obey_v with_o a_o blind_a and_o implicit_a faith_n they_o swear_v also_o to_o maintain_v the_o fundamental_a law_n of_o this_o kingdom_n and_o in_o the_o same_o breath_n they_o swear_v to_o maintain_v the_o free_a exercise_n of_o the_o roman_n catholic_n religion_n which_o be_v express_o against_o law_n as_o it_o be_v that_o any_o shall_v govern_v the_o kingdom_n but_o by_o his_o majesty_n authority_n which_o they_o assume_v and_o usurp_v in_o all_o the_o essential_o of_o it_o nay_o not_o only_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o oath_n be_v against_o those_o law_n they_o swear_v to_o maintain_v but_o even_o the_o take_n or_o impose_v of_o any_o oath_n which_o by_o law_n be_v not_o warrant_v be_v a_o violation_n of_o the_o law_n but_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o own_v these_o their_o crime_n that_o they_o swear_v they_o will_v not_o seek_v or_o receive_v direct_o or_o indirect_o any_o pardon_n or_o protection_n for_o any_o thing_n do_v or_o to_o be_v do_v touch-this_a general_n cause_n etc._n etc._n they_o can_v be_v content_a to_o seek_v and_o receive_v a_o pardon_n from_o the_o pope_n for_o sin_n to_o come_v but_o they_o swear_v they_o neither_o will_v seek_v or_o receive_v direct_o or_o indirect_o
a_o pardon_n for_o nay_o not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o protection_n from_o his_o majesty_n for_o sin_n past_a without_o the_o consent_n of_o their_o supreme_a council_n this_o be_v a_o fine_a bear_a faith_n and_o allegiance_n to_o the_o king_n this_o be_v a_o good_a uphold_v and_o maintain_v the_o fundamental_a law_n of_o the_o kingdom_n they_o swear_v too_o that_o these_o act_n of_o high_a rebellion_n they_o will_v to_o the_o hazard_n of_o their_o life_n and_o estate_n assist_v prosecute_v and_o maintain_v but_o they_o proceed_v further_o for_o they_o swear_v not_o to_o accept_v of_o or_o submit_v to_o any_o peace_n make_v or_o to_o be_v make_v without_o the_o consent_n and_o approbation_n of_o the_o general_n assembly_n of_o the_o say_v catholic_n any_o peace_n that_o be_v let_v the_o condition_n be_v never_o so_o good_a let_v the_o person_n that_o grant_v they_o be_v the_o king_n himself_o they_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o it_o they_o will_v not_o submit_v unto_o it_o without_z etc._n etc._n if_o the_o king_n will_v so_o far_o forget_v those_o signal_n crime_n which_o make_v they_o need_v his_o pardon_n and_o protection_n and_o will_v not_o so_o much_o as_o name_v they_o but_o make_v a_o peace_n with_o they_o as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o do_v any_o offence_n yet_o they_o swear_v that_o not_o one_o of_o they_o shall_v accept_v of_o or_o submit_v to_o such_o a_o peace_n but_o as_o be_v before_o express_v nay_o to_o show_v how_o perfect_a a_o romish_a confederacy_n it_o be_v if_o any_o individual_a shall_v be_v strike_v with_o the_o horror_n of_o his_o crime_n he_o can_v fly_v to_o the_o king_n mercy_n for_o pardon_n or_o protection_n without_o perjury_n and_o to_o inveigle_v such_o as_o have_v not_o then_o be_v pollute_v with_o those_o sin_n they_o swear_v to_o protect_v all_o such_o as_o shall_v enter_v into_o their_o guilt_n and_o thereby_o in_o consequence_n threaten_v to_o ruin_v such_o as_o shall_v not_o this_o be_v admirable_a bear_v true_a faith_n and_o allegiance_n to_o the_o king_n and_o maintain_v the_o law_n of_o the_o kingdom_n but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o for_o they_o further_o swear_v in_o these_o word_n viz._n for_o the_o preservation_n and_o strengthen_n of_o the_o union_n of_o the_o kingdom_n upon_o any_o peace_n to_o be_v make_v or_o conclude_v with_o the_o say_v confederate_a catholic_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v express_v in_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o the_o roman_a catholic_n both_o clergy_n and_o laity_n in_o their_o several_a capacity_n have_v the_o free_a and_o public_a exercise_n of_o the_o roman_n catholic_n religion_n and_o function_n throughout_o the_o kingdom_n in_o as_o full_a lustre_n and_o splendour_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o reign_n of_o king_n henry_n the_o seven_o or_o other_o catholic_n king_n his_o predecessor_n king_n of_o england_n and_o lord_n of_o ireland_n or_o in_o england_n that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o none_o shall_v be_v admit_v to_o live_v in_o ireland_n but_o papist_n for_o none_o or_o very_o few_o but_o such_o be_v in_o the_o reign_n of_o those_o king_n in_o ireland_n the_o second_o proposition_n mention_v follow_v in_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o the_o secular_a clergy_n of_o ireland_n viz._n primate_fw-la archbishop_n ordinary_n dean_n dean_n and_o chapter_n archdeacon_n prebendary_n and_o all_o other_o dignitaries_n parson_n vicar_n and_o all_o person_n of_o the_o secular_a clergy_n and_o their_o respective_a successor_n shall_v have_v and_o enjoy_v all_o and_o all_o manner_n of_o jurisdiction_n privilege_n and_o immunity_n in_o as_o full_a and_o ample_a manner_n as_o the_o roman_a catholic_n secular_a clergy_n have_v or_o enjoy_v the_o same_o within_o this_o realm_n at_o any_o time_n during_o the_o reign_n of_o the_o late_a king_n henry_n the_o seven_o sometime_o king_n of_o england_n and_o lord_n of_o ireland_n any_o law_n declaration_n of_o law_n statute_n power_n or_o authority_n whatever_o to_o the_o contrary_a notwithstanding_o that_o be_v to_o say_v their_o will_n must_v be_v the_o law_n and_o since_o they_o think_v fit_a to_o set_v up_o popery_n in_o ireland_n and_o to_o banish_v the_o true_a religion_n out_o of_o it_o it_o be_v but_o requisite_a they_o shall_v take_v the_o maintenance_n from_o the_o legal_a and_o give_v it_o to_o the_o titular_a clergy_n and_o lest_o we_o shall_v doubt_v this_o to_o be_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o the_o second_o proposal_n they_o clear_o explain_v it_o in_o the_o four_o which_o follow_v in_o these_o word_n viz._n that_o the_o primate_fw-la archbishop_n bishop_n ordinary_n dean_n dean_n and_o chapter_n archdeacon_n chancelour_n treasurer_n chanter_n provost_n warden_n of_o collegiate_n church_n prebendary_n and_o other_o dignitaries_n parson_n vicar_n and_o other_o pastor_n of_o the_o roman_n catholic_n secular_a clergy_n and_o their_o respective_a successor_n shall_v have_v hold_v enjoy_v all_o the_o church_n and_o church-living_n in_o as_o large_a and_o ample_a manner_n as_o the_o late_a protestant_a clergy_n respective_o enjoy_v the_o same_o on_o the_o first_o day_n of_o october_n in_o the_o year_n of_o our_o lord_n 1641._o together_o with_o all_o the_o profit_n emolument_n perquisites_n liberty_n and_o the_o right_n of_o their_o respective_a see_v and_o church_n belong_v as_o well_o in_o place_n now_o in_o possession_n of_o the_o confederate_a catholic_n as_o also_o in_o all_o other_o place_n that_o shall_v be_v recover_v by_o the_o say_v confederate_a catholic_n from_o the_o adverse_a party_n within_o the_o kingdom_n save_v to_o the_o say_a roman_a catholic_n laity_n their_o right_n according_a to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n that_o be_v to_o say_v our_o clergy_n shall_v have_v all_o therefore_o you_o can_v have_v nothing_o this_o be_v a_o perfect_a fifth-monarchy_n principle_n for_o here_o dominion_n be_v only_o found_v in_o pretend_a grace_n none_o be_v to_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o the_o law_n of_o the_o land_n but_o the_o papist_n nay_o his_o sacred_a majesty_n because_o a_o protestant_n be_v as_o such_o deny_v any_o one_o of_o those_o right_n which_o the_o mean_a of_o the_o irish_a rebel_n because_o a_o papist_n be_v to_o enjoy_v as_o such_o and_o lest_o their_o word_n for_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v they_o confirm_v it_o with_o a_o oath_n the_o legal_a and_o orthodox_n clergy_n of_o ireland_n may_v see_v in_o this_o what_o goodly_a provision_n have_v be_v make_v for_o they_o and_o their_o respective_a successor_n if_o this_o pious_a roman_a catholic_n confederacy_n have_v succeed_v but_o least_o this_o their_o first_o oath_n of_o confederacy_n may_v be_v think_v a_o thing_n they_o be_v surprise_v into_o in_o the_o first_o heat_n and_o fury_n of_o the_o rebellion_n
