A64939 A review and examination of a book bearing the title of The history of the indulgence wherein the lawfulness of the acceptance of the peaceable exercise of the ministry granted by the Acts of the magistrates indulgence is demonstrated, contrary objections answered, and the vindication of such as withdraw from hearing indulged ministers is confuted : to which is added a survey of the mischievous absurdities of the late bond and Sanquhair declaration. notwithstanding_o of_o such_o a_o circumstantial_a difference_n if_o man_n otherwise_o set_v themselves_o to_o it_o and_o the_o general_a ground_n former_o lay_v down_o do_v confirm_v this_o thus_o far_o i_o have_v transcribe_v the_o word_n of_o the_o godly_a learned_a peaceable_a mr._n durham_n i_o will_v desire_v the_o reader_n to_o read_v also_o his_o 12_o chapter_n and_o his_o whole_a book_n which_o be_v a_o precious_a treasure_n which_o if_o the_o historian_n have_v ponder_v and_o practise_v he_o and_o they_o who_o follow_v he_o may_v through_o the_o lord_n bless_v be_v keep_v out_o of_o these_o divisive_a and_o destructive_a way_n if_o the_o historian_n will_v have_v follow_v mr._n durham_n advice_n first_o he_o may_v have_v forbear_v to_o vent_v and_o to_o press_v other_o to_o vent_v this_o which_o he_o call_v light_a think_v it_o have_v be_v light_a indeed_o for_o it_o be_v no_o fundamental_a truth_n that_o he_o and_o they_o call_v light_n he_o can_v charge_v the_o indulge_v minister_n that_o they_o maintain_v doctrinal_o any_o erastian_n error_n all_o that_o he_o allege_v upon_o they_o when_o he_o explain_v himself_o be_v that_o they_o have_v by_o their_o practice_n interpretative_o homologate_v the_o supremacy_n now_o see_v these_o minister_n teach_v no_o erroneous_a doctrine_n concern_v the_o magistrate_n power_n about_o church-matter_n but_o maintain_v the_o principle_n of_o all_o orthodox_n anti-erastian_a divine_n and_o see_v they_o be_v know_v to_o be_v conscientious_a man_n and_o declare_v upon_o all_o occasion_n that_o their_o practice_n in_o make_v use_n of_o the_o indulgence_n be_v not_o contrary_a to_o but_o consistent_a with_o and_o according_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o these_o anti-erastian_a divine_n the_o most_o that_o the_o author_n can_v make_v out_o of_o this_o be_v that_o they_o be_v mistake_v in_o the_o application_n of_o these_o principle_n to_o that_o particular_a fact_n of_o acceptance_n of_o the_o peaceable_a exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n from_o the_o magistrate_n now_o what_o necessity_n be_v there_o in_o vent_v this_o light_n this_o interpretative_a homologation_n of_o the_o supremacy_n which_o yet_o be_v but_o confound_a darkness_n to_o the_o poor_a people_n who_o know_v not_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o these_o word_n by_o which_o he_o explain_v how_o these_o minister_n be_v guilty_a they_o can_v interpret_v his_o interpretative_a homologation_n his_o light_n be_v to_o they_o darkness_n he_o clear_v these_o indulge_v minister_n of_o have_v any_o erastian_n error_n in_o their_o head_n he_o grant_v they_o have_v no_o ill_a intention_n in_o their_o mind_n and_o heart_n when_o they_o accept_v the_o indulgence_n he_o grant_v there_o be_v no_o ill_a intention_n in_o the_o worker_n but_o in_o the_o work_n do_v by_o they_o and_o that_o what_o they_o do_v do_v not_o formal_o and_o explicit_o import_v any_o approbation_n of_o any_o sinful_a supremacy_n but_o only_o implicit_o virtual_o and_o interpretative_o what_o necessity_n be_v there_o of_o tell_v the_o people_n this_o implicit_a error_n in_o a_o matter_n of_o fact_n see_v when_o he_o tell_v it_o most_o distinct_o it_o be_v so_o subtle_a a_o kind_n of_o fault_n that_o the_o people_n can_v understand_v it_o it_o be_v so_o womple_v up_o in_o latin_a implicit_a perplex_a word_n that_o they_o can_v get_v a_o sight_n of_o it_o and_o though_o the_o historian_n do_v real_o intend_v to_o diminish_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o indulge_v minister_n when_o he_o say_v they_o themselves_o do_v not_o intend_v any_o ill_n in_o their_o acceptance_n but_o it_o be_v only_o the_o intention_n of_o the_o work_n and_o when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o work_n do_v not_o formal_o and_o explicit_o tend_v to_o ill_a but_o virtual_o implicit_o and_o interpretative_o yet_o the_o people_n be_v not_o capable_a of_o understand_v these_o diminish_v term_n and_o so_o think_v it_o to_o be_v some_o ill_a thing_n these_o word_n that_o be_v unintelligible_a by_o they_o increase_v the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o illness_n or_o evil_n of_o it_o even_o as_o when_o simple_a people_n know_v that_o the_o thing_n commend_v be_v good_a if_o you_o commend_v it_o in_o word_n that_o they_o do_v not_o understand_v it_o heighten_v their_o conceit_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o it_o what_o effect_n can_v the_o historian_n think_v that_o this_o dark_a light_n can_v have_v upon_o the_o mind_n and_o affection_n of_o the_o poor_a people_n but_o to_o beget_v a_o ill_a opinion_n of_o and_o prejudice_n against_o and_o hatred_n of_o these_o honest_a man_n who_o as_o he_o grant_v himself_o mean_v no_o ill_n now_o do_v this_o any_o way_n tend_v to_o the_o people_n edification_n do_v it_o not_o upon_o the_o contrary_a tend_v to_o their_o hurt_n for_o whereas_o before_o they_o be_v edify_v by_o the_o ministry_n of_o these_o minister_n they_o be_v put_v in_o a_o incapacity_n of_o get_v that_o good_a by_o their_o ministry_n which_o they_o be_v wont_v former_o to_o get_v so_o that_o they_o be_v no_o way_n edify_v but_o prejudge_v and_o their_o edification_n hinder_v but_o 2._o if_o he_o will_v have_v be_v advise_v by_o mr._n durham_n he_o may_v well_o have_v forbear_v to_o have_v vent_v this_o light_n because_o the_o forbearance_n of_o vent_v it_o can_v no_o way_n have_v endanger_v the_o salvation_n of_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o people_n nor_o mar_v they_o in_o any_o duty_n that_o the_o church_n
