or_o very_o incertain_o operative_a so_o that_o although_o it_o may_v produce_v something_o of_o practice_n while_o the_o fit_a of_o assent_n be_v upon_o the_o soul_n yet_o it_o produce_v no_o steady_a certain_a constant_a practice_n so_o as_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o a_o practical_a assent_n to_o the_o proposition_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v true_a justify_v faith_n to_o which_o be_v annex_v the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n yet_o if_o by_o it_o we_o mean_v such_o a_o agreement_n of_o our_o mind_n to_o the_o truth_n as_o produce_v a_o certain_a steady_a constant_a or_o ordinary_a practice_n and_o course_n of_o life_n conformable_a to_o the_o proposition_n of_o truth_n which_o we_o agree_v as_o this_o will_v imply_v trust_v and_o rely_v on_o christ_n for_o life_n move_v be_v but_o in_o a_o way_n of_o special_a favour_n and_o work_a for_o man_n agree_v to_o the_o holy_a scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n firm_o and_o steady_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o he_o agree_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o proposition_n which_o be_v reveal_v in_o it_o alone_o and_o that_o be_v the_o special_a work_n of_o god_n in_o soul_n that_o shall_v be_v save_v of_o agree_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o jesus_n of_o nazareth_n once_o in_o the_o world_n who_o go_v about_o do_v good_a exhort_v man_n to_o a_o good_a life_n and_o be_v crucify_a etc._n etc._n as_o that_o there_o be_v in_o england_n a_o william_n the_o conqueror_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o that_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o other_o book_n of_o tolerable_a credit_n and_o reputation_n in_o the_o world_n or_o if_o man_n think_v that_o they_o do_v true_o believe_v because_o they_o agree_v many_o proposition_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v evident_a in_o the_o light_n of_o reason_n they_o again_o deceive_v themselves_o here_o may_v be_v nothing_o of_o the_o operation_n of_o god_n in_o this_o faith_n nay_o if_o they_o agree_v the_o proposition_n of_o the_o gospel_n because_o they_o be_v reveal_v there_o and_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n do_v not_o agree_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n but_o look_v upon_o they_o in_o the_o same_o rank_n with_o human_a write_n or_o only_o by_o a_o human_a say_v agree_v they_o to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n because_o the_o church_n have_v so_o deliver_v and_o transmit_v they_o here_o be_v all_o this_o while_n no_o thing_n of_o the_o special_a operation_n of_o god_n nor_o will_v this_o agreement_n produce_v any_o steadiness_n and_o firmness_n of_o practice_n commensurate_a to_o the_o revelation_n but_o only_o concern_v this_o life_n or_o those_o which_o concern_v that_o life_n which_o be_v to_o come_v they_o be_v all_o grace_n in_o a_o large_a sense_n because_o emanation_n of_o divine_a love_n not_o merit_v by_o creature_n but_o word_n take_v their_o significancy_n more_o from_o use_n than_o etymology_n grace_n in_o a_o more_o strict_a and_o usual_a notion_n have_v be_v take_v to_o signify_v the_o emanation_n of_o divine_a love_n concern_v the_o soul_n and_o eternal_a salvation_n of_o the_o child_n of_o man_n which_o be_v call_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o bring_v salvation_n now_o these_o divine_a emanation_n have_v different_a effect_n this_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v also_o distinguish_v into_o common_a and_o special_a ineffectual_a and_o effectual_a under_o the_o notion_n of_o common_a grace_n we_o comprehend_v all_o those_o efflux_n of_o divine_a goodness_n by_o which_o god_n show_v his_o kindness_n to_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n in_o order_n to_o their_o salvation_n whether_o they_o prove_v effective_a of_o their_o salvation_n yea_o or_o no_o under_o this_o head_n some_o will_v bring_v both_o election_n and_o redemption_n own_v no_o other_o election_n than_o the_o eternal_a counsel_n of_o god_n to_o save_v such_o as_o shall_v believe_v so_o deny_v all_o eternal_a election_n of_o person_n and_o make_v christ_n intention_n in_o die_v to_o extend_v to_o all_o either_o equal_o or_o at_o least_o so_o far_o as_o to_o put_v all_o in_o a_o possibility_n of_o salvation_n if_o their_o own_o perverse_a will_n do_v not_o hinder_v the_o publication_n and_o proposal_n of_o the_o gospel_n with_o the_o common_a influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n attend_v the_o preach_n of_o it_o certain_o come_v under_o this_o notion_n for_o though_o all_o hear_v not_o that_o it_o be_v most_o irrational_a to_o plead_v for_o a_o power_n in_o the_o will_n of_o man_n to_o choose_v they_o the_o sweetness_n of_o what_o the_o lapse_v soul_n in_o its_o state_n of_o alienation_n from_o god_n taste_v in_o sensible_a satisfaction_n be_v a_o thing_n evident_a to_o sense_n and_o it_o be_v

plant_n grow_v downward_o in_o the_o root_n when_o they_o do_v not_o grow_v upward_o into_o the_o air_n so_o as_o their_o growth_n be_v not_o so_o sensible_a and_o difcernable_a so_o it_o be_v possible_a there_o may_v be_v some_o such_o christian_n who_o though_o their_o proficiency_n may_v not_o so_o much_o appear_v in_o their_o outward_a performance_n which_o require_v a_o growth_n in_o gift_n and_o part_n yet_o they_o may_v be_v grow_v more_o in_o faith_n and_o love_n and_o hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o resolution_n for_o god_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o be_v a_o good_a run_n in_o grace_n they_o grow_v best_a who_o grow_v in_o the_o root_n not_o those_o who_o improve_v most_o in_o leaf_n and_o more_o exterior_a branch_n of_o christian_a profession_n 2._o if_o christian_n can_v satisfy_v themselves_o that_o they_o run_v in_o any_o sense_n it_o will_v be_v inquire_v from_o whence_o they_o be_v hinder_v whether_o from_o some_o cause_n from_o within_o or_o from_o without_o 1._o a_o man_n may_v be_v hinder_v in_o his_o bodily_a run_v by_o some_o inward_a obstruction_n bodily_a decay_n or_o weakness_n this_o must_v be_v cure_v or_o purge_v out_o christian_n ought_v to_o search_v whether_o they_o have_v no_o secret_a lust_n no_o love_n to_o the_o world_n no_o greedy_a desire_n to_o be_v rich_a nothing_o of_o sensuality_n which_o weaken_v their_o soul_n and_o keep_v preach_v 2._o if_o the_o sinner_n do_v to_o his_o utmost_a obey_v those_o drawing_n and_o god_n yet_o deny_v his_o further_a and_o more_o effectual_a grace_n but_o as_o i_o have_v before_o show_v you_o there_o be_v no_o soul_n that_o live_v under_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o be_v draw_v draw_v by_o exhortation_n argument_n promise_n of_o reward_n etc._n etc._n the_o proper_a cord_n of_o a_o man._n nay_o there_o be_v none_o among_o the_o heathen_n but_o be_v draw_v by_o the_o cord_n of_o common_a gracious_a providence_n god_n say_v the_o apostle_n leave_v not_o they_o without_o witness_n now_o though_o none_o of_o these_o cord_n be_v sufficient_a to_o draw_v the_o soul_n home_o to_o christ_n yet_o they_o be_v sufficient_a with_o that_o power_n which_o be_v leave_v in_o the_o will_n of_o man_n to_o engage_v he_o to_o many_o act_n of_o reformation_n and_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o many_o act_n of_o moral_a discipline_n yea_o and_o of_o religion_n too_o that_o part_n of_o it_o which_o lie_v in_o bodily_a exercise_n if_o man_n will_v not_o do_v what_o they_o have_v a_o power_n to_o do_v how_o shall_v their_o destruction_n be_v from_o god_n for_o deny_v they_o his_o special_a grace_n especial_o when_o we_o say_v that_o although_o the_o good_a use_n of_o common_a grace_n merit_v nothing_o at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n yet_o god_n do_v never_o deny_v his_o special_a grace_n but_o where_o common_a grace_n be_v first_o wilful_o abuse_v and_o thus_o the_o destruction_n of_o sinner_n lie_v at_o their_o own_o door_n not_o because_o that_o if_o they_o
