same_o faith_n though_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o make_v the_o one_o of_o they_o to_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o the_o other_o or_o the_o one_o of_o they_o to_o be_v antecedent_n to_o the_o other_o in_o respect_n of_o time_n at_o least_o as_o a_o proclamation_n of_o pardon_n be_v make_v to_o rebel_n they_o say_v this_o proclamation_n give_v a_o freedom_n from_o the_o law_n pursuit_n because_o they_o quarrel_v for_o or_o charge_v with_o the_o debt_n of_o sin_n the_o uses_n be_v 1._o to_o remove_v the_o difficulty_n as_o namely_o it_o may_v be_v ask_v here_o be_v there_o no_o confidence_n not_o assurance_n in_o this_o active_a act_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o essence_n of_o it_o we_o answer_v short_o there_o be_v three_o sort_n of_o confidence_n plead_v for_o that_o be_v far_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o yet_o faith_n want_v not_o its_o own_o confidence_n and_o assurance_n if_o it_o be_v take_v in_o a_o right_a sense_n the_o 1._o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o believe_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o he_o in_o particular_a at_o the_o first_o hand_n and_o to_o think_v that_o he_o have_v no_o more_o to_o do_v but_o to_o believe_v that_o christ_n die_v and_o suffer_v for_o he_o and_o that_o thereupon_o he_o be_v justify_v for_o this_o lay_v a_o ground_n for_o universal_a redemption_n against_o the_o current_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o can_v never_o be_v a_o ground_n of_o interest_n in_o christ_n righteousness_n it_o suppose_v that_o to_o be_v do_v already_o and_o admit_v not_o the_o soul_n to_o concur_v by_o believe_v for_o come_v to_o the_o application_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v very_o rise_v among_o people_n i_o believe_v that_o christ_n die_v for_o i_o and_o shed_v his_o precious_a blood_n for_o i_o and_o so_o long_o as_o they_o can_v maintain_v this_o presumption_n and_o not_o suffer_v themselves_o to_o admit_v of_o any_o debate_n and_o question_v whether_o they_o have_v ground_n and_o reason_n for_o it_o or_o not_o they_o think_v they_o have_v faith_n enough_o but_o this_o be_v no_o act_n of_o faith_n nor_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o true_a justify_v faith_n which_o be_v to_o take_v hold_n of_o christ_n offer_v that_o we_o may_v come_v to_o be_v absolve_v through_o he_o therefore_o when_o ever_o the_o scripture_n put_v we_o to_o believe_v it_o command_v we_o to_o take_v hold_n of_o christ_n offer_v and_o not_o at_o first_o hand_n to_o believe_v that_o he_o die_v for_o we_o in_o particular_a i_o suppose_v many_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o this_o presumption_n that_o will_v to_o their_o cost_n at_o last_o find_v it_o to_o be_v otherways_o 2._o other_o think_v that_o all_o faith_n consist_v in_o this_o to_o believe_v that_o god_n love_v they_o from_o all_o eternity_n and_o that_o they_o be_v already_o justify_v which_o be_v the_o antinomian_a way_n they_o believe_v not_o that_o they_o may_v be_v justify_v which_o be_v paul_n way_n gal._n 2.16_o but_o they_o believe_v that_o they_o be_v justify_v and_o this_o also_o presuppon_n a_o universal_a redemption_n and_o to_o press_v it_o upon_o you_o be_v to_o bid_v you_o all_o believe_v that_o god_n have_v love_v you_o and_o pardon_v you_o from_o all_o eternity_n which_o be_v to_o bid_v you_o believe_v a_o lie_n for_o we_o wot_v well_o from_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n that_o god_n have_v not_o love_v all_o from_o eternity_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v the_o faith_n that_o many_o of_o you_o presumptuous_o practice_n we_o be_v all_o natural_o some_o way_n antinomian_o papist_n and_o arminian_o in_o our_o practice_n and_o the_o way_n of_o error_n be_v more_o consistent_a and_o current_n with_o our_o nature_n than_o the_o way_n of_o truth_n but_o o_o presumptuous_a hypocrite_n will_v you_o dar_o and_o without_o any_o ground_n believe_v god_n love_n to_o you_o god_n shall_v shake_v you_o out_o of_o that_o confidence_n and_o blow_v upon_o it_o and_o make_v it_o evanish_v you_o cry_v out_o on_o they_o that_o live_v in_o error_n yet_o you_o practise_v these_o same_o error_n to_o speak_v so_o as_o fast_o as_o you_o can_v we_o can_v by_o much_o preach_a get_v you_o bring_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n but_o you_o can_v drink_v in_o error_n ere_o you_o hear_v of_o it_o and_o it_o will_v ruin_v your_o soul_n if_o grace_n prevent_v not_o and_o many_o of_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o thus_o you_o have_v destroy_v yourselves_o to_o be_v justify_v ere_o they_o die_v or_o that_o at_o death_n they_o will_v be_v sure_a of_o it_o and_o they_o wot_v well_o they_o shall_v not_o despair_v this_o be_v also_o naughty_a presumption_n and_o continue_v in_o as_o hazardous_a as_o outer_a disperation_n and_o kill_v more_o soul_n than_o despair_n do_v for_o such_o rest_n quiet_o in_o their_o hope_n of_o be_v fir_v from_o wrath_n and_o christ_n and_o not_o fear_v that_o he_o fail_v they_o or_o that_o they_o may_v without_o all_o fear_n of_o hazard_n cast_v themselves_o on_o christ_n therefore_o he_o be_v call_v a_o try_a elect_a precious_a cornerstone_n a_o sure_a foundation_n and_o indeed_o that_o be_v no_o small_a ground_n of_o confidence_n that_o when_o a_o soul_n come_v to_o christ_n by_o believe_v it_o may_v be_v sure_a he_o will_v not_o fail_v it_o 2._o be_v sure_o that_o we_o have_v commit_v ourselves_o to_o christ_n which_o suppose_v faith_n be_v put_v to_o exercise_n and_o practice_n there_o may_v be_v a_o confidence_n in_o this_o respect_n we_o may_v be_v sure_o he_o will_v not_o fail_v we_o in_o particular_a 2_o tim._n 1.12_o i_o know_v in_o who_o i_o have_v believe_v and_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v that_o i_o have_v commit_v to_o he_o and_o that_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v ashamed_a he_o put_v both_o these_o together_o i_o know_v that_o he_o be_v able_a and_o that_o he_o will_v not_o gospel_n and_o it_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o many_o more_o error_n and_o much_o delusion_n it_o be_v even_o as_o a_o blind_a man_n can_v go_v well_o in_o a_o slippery_a place_n where_o be_v many_o pit_n for_o knowledge_n be_v no_o less_o necessary_a to_o faith_n than_o eye_n be_v to_o such_o a_o man_n the_o practical_a error_n in_o this_o be_v such_o as_o we_o find_v in_o many_o of_o you_o who_o think_v you_o can_v believe_v well_o but_o ask_v and_o put_v you_o to_o it_o you_o can_v tell_v what_o many_o of_o you_o be_v obstinate_a maintainer_n of_o implicit_a faith_n while_o you_o say_v you_o have_v faith_n and_o yet_o can_v tell_v what_o it_o be_v nor_o whereon_o it_o be_v ground_v but_o we_o say_v that_o knowledge_n be_v so_o necessary_a to_o faith_n that_o if_o it_o be_v not_o a_o part_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o be_v necessary_o antecedanious_a to_o it_o and_o presuppose_v therefore_o if_o ever_o you_o will_v be_v account_v believer_n study_v knowledge_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o christ_n crucify_a at_o least_o so_o far_o as_o to_o ground_v your_o faith_n upon_o it_o be_v sad_a that_o so_o many_o will_v maintain_v the_o reality_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o yet_o be_v justify_v free_o by_o his_o grace_n through_o the_o redemption_n that_o be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n where_o be_v the_o great_a mean_a of_o our_o justification_n and_o then_o he_o add_v v._o 25._o who_o god_n have_v set_v forth_o to_o be_v a_o propitiation_n through_o faith_n in_o his_o blood_n where_o we_o have_v the_o mean_v of_o application_n to_o wit_n faith_n and_o chap._n 4.5_o to_o he_o that_o work_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a his_o faith_n be_v count_v for_o righteousness_n which_o place_n demonstrat_n this_o that_o a_o ungodly_a person_n take_v hold_n you_o will_v we_o say_v consider_v these_o ground_n or_o reason_n for_o confirm_v the_o doctrine_n 1._o the_o suffering_n that_o christ_n have_v endure_v and_o the_o satisfaction_n that_o he_o have_v make_v in_o the_o room_n of_o sinner_n as_o the_o next_o word_n hold_v out_o for_o he_o shall_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n and_o v._o ult_n he_o bear_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o nay_o this_o be_v the_o great_a scope_n of_o the_o chapter_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o have_v bear_v our_o grief_n and_o carry_v our_o sorrow_n and_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v lay_v on_o he_o the_o iniquity_n of_o we_o all_o this_o make_v a_o ground_n of_o confirmation_n 2._o consider_v how_o that_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o sufficient_a price_n pay_v but_o there_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n this_o covenant_n faith_n have_v not_o a_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o rest_v on_o for_o justification_n through_o jesus_n his_o satisfaction_n because_o otherways_o we_o see_v not_o a_o reason_n why_o his_o suffering_n can_v be_v accept_v for_o we_o for_o suppose_v if_o such_o a_o supposition_n may_v warrantable_o be_v make_v christ_n to_o have_v suffer_v yet_o it_o be_v free_a for_o god_n to_o have_v accept_v that_o as_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o our_o debt_n or_o not_o but_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n remove_v that_o doubt_v and_o give_v faith_n a_o ground_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n suffering_n as_o satisfactory_a to_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n because_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n it_o be_v so_o transact_v and_o agree_v upon_o betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o mediator_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n speak_v heb._n 10.8_o 9_o and_o forward_o from_o psal_n 40._o of_o this_o covenant_n show_v that_o when_o sacrifice_n and_o offering_n will_v not_o do_v the_o turn_n christ_n come_v in_o say_v lo_o i_o come_v in_o the_o volume_n of_o thy_o book_n it_o be_v write_v of_o i_o i_o delight_v to_o do_v thy_o
to_o god_n i_o shall_v only_o say_v further_a here_o that_o though_o we_o can_v tell_v how_o he_o intercee_v to_o satisfy_v ourselves_o full_o yet_o this_o be_v clear_o hold_v forth_o to_o we_o that_o word_n be_v put_v in_o the_o forecited_a expression_n whatsoever_o you_o ask_v in_o my_o name_n i_o will_v do_v it_o that_o the_o father_n may_v be_v glorify_v in_o the_o son_n and_o whâ—m_o the_o father_n will_v send_v in_o my_o name_n that_o be_v by_o virtue_n of_o my_o procurement_n by_o virtue_n of_o my_o sacrifice_n and_o intercession_n and_o the_o send_n of_o the_o comforter_n show_v consolatioon_n that_o flow_v from_o this_o part_n of_o christ_n office_n o_o what_o savourinesse_n and_o unsearchable_a riches_n be_v in_o this_o part_n of_o his_o name_n that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n as_o intercessor_n appear_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o we_o we_o shall_v speak_v here_o to_o these_o five_o thing_n 1._o wherein_o this_o be_v comfortable_a or_o to_o the_o extent_n of_o it_o 2._o to_o the_o advantage_n that_o follow_v on_o it_o 3._o to_o the_o ground_n of_o this_o consolation_n which_o be_v confirmation_n of_o it_o 4._o to_o this_o at_o what_o time_n and_o particular_a occasion_n the_o people_n of_o god_n may_v and_o aught_o in_o a_o special_a manner_n to_o make_v use_n of_o and_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o it_o and_o 5._o on_o what_o term_n this_o consolation_n be_v allow_v that_o they_o grow_v not_o vain_a and_o proud_a of_o it_o for_o the_o first_o our_o lord_n intercession_n give_v a_o fourfold_a extent_n of_o consolation_n that_o make_v christ_n die_v and_o intend_v his_o death_n for_o many_o that_o will_v never_o get_v good_a of_o he_o but_o we_o say_v all_o that_o he_o intend_v shall_v get_v good_a of_o his_o death_n do_v get_v
